**This was inspired by John William Waterhouse's wonderful painting "La Belle Dame Sans Merci".  I doubt what he portrayed in the picture is remotely the same as what I made it to be, but I just can't see that poor woman in the painting merciless.

Unhappy Parting
2/20/03

They were alone together
The last time for a long time
A wooded area by a stream
They sit in quiet and gentle chitchat

The breeze was warm
The sky was blue
A faint scent of lilies all about

All would have been well
But he was leaving
Within the moment or the hour
La Belle Dame was unsure

A while passed in silence
Naught but the birds chirping
And the stream bubbling
Until he made a move to leave

His armor clanked
The bushes rustled
La Belle Dame’s breath caught in her throat

He stopped on one knee
Peered down at her
She looked up
Grasping the scarf about his neck

La Belle Dame’s eyes
Filled with longing and with sadness
But mostly with love

Scarf in hand she pulled him forward
Their soft lips brushing each to each
Her salty saddened tears
Ever mingled with their sweet meeting

Lips unlocked suddenly
Her grip removed from the scarf
He stood and turned quickly on his heel

La Belle Dame’s quiet sobs escape
As he continues down the stream
To the road beyond the bend
Her whispered words never reach his ears

La Belle Dame’s knight was gone.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

"Sans merci" transformed beautifully ... quite a deed!
