Dust Storms

Konrad pointed his nose
South, southeast, thinking a freighter
Might have been the better
Of the trip,
But not wanting to deal with
Water-rats, he felt safer on foot
And left the familial storm behind him,

Catching trucks,
Having passed from
Reynosa through Tamauiplas,
Stopping the second night out of
Nuevo Laredo in Ciudad Victoria.

23.8° N 99.1° W,
Knowing he had left
The cold behind, and deeper
Troughs of bygone times,
Death certificates notwithstanding,
102 humid degrees pasted his blue flannel
Pulling on his biceps, and he wondered,
Then dismissed
Any thought of pulling a new shirt
From his duffel bag;
Temps would drop by nightfall, even
A sweat-soaked dirty shirt was better than
A thin white T…

The sun was falling over the mountains
As the trucker pulled into the cantina,
The dust powdery, different, not held back
By the humidity on this side
Of Mexico.

A petite senorita nodded
As Konrad parted swinging doors,
Noting a fan circling
Lazy overhead, moving as much dust
As air, and not much of either settling,

He held his fingers to form the holding
Of an imaginary stein, his abilities at holding
A conversation less than the invisible drink
He had just ordered.

No wonder Jake often thought him a bother,
Never was good with
Languages, except for that of the
Unutterable ones,
Ones that Jake didn’t always comprehend,
But that Iambe understood,
And Dillon felt…

“Senor?” the soft voice was not
The deep voice of Dana, although her
Skin was brown, and creamy,
She was not tall, and though her hair was dark,
She did not have the rich chocolate eyes
Of Dana…

Dust gritted Konrad’s eyes, having
Parched his mouth most of
The last two days,
Wearily he wondered where the trucker
Had gone, before he reached up

Took the beer from her small hands,
Gave her some coins, and drank deep.
The bitter chill made him shiver, he had
Not expected it so cold,
And it drained well.

Perhaps sensing his lack of ability,
The young girl ventured,
“Donde tu eres ida – ah, you are
somewhere going?”

Konrad, tired, sleepy, the beer hitting his
Belly hard, looked up into gray eyes,
Muttered, “Belize”, his head falling
Forward onto his arm,
And before he could see only black,
He heard, “come back to me,”
Cried weakly, “Dana!”
And slept.

Yes!  This I can learn from.
Like the edge you are giving Konrad, he deserves it after all those headaches...lol.

The images are incredible.
Excellent Karilea!

I do so enjoy when you keep us circling....
love the imagery in this.

Dont let him nap too long

Ethel...interesting is a good word.  Thank you!

Enchantress, if I can keep you fascinated, then you ought to be following Cpat...he will keep you ENTRANCED!

Well, I'm getting the pieces out of sequences but loving it just the same.  I'm sneezing with the dust and dripping with the humidity.  KJ
