Schooner Gulch

My son scampers over pointed rocks,
a mountain goat prancing down
switchback hills.
I plod and slide along the southern trail,
making muddy tracks and rolling stones;
arms straight out for balance,
caterwauling in nagging,
motherly fashion.

I meet him on the sand -
Bowling Ball Beach.
Walk to his circular, spinning run.

He squeals:

Look, mommy, look!

What?

Treasure!

A broken abalone shell
in one small hand -
I take the other.
We talk. Old friends.
I watch with the eyes of a visitor,
snapping Poloroids
for a later time.

~Treasure~ as is this very descriptive poem. True to life, from mother climbing down that steep hill to the beach as children take the dangerous way, to the charming scene of mother and son...I like this much. Touches my heart and brings back memories.

I agree. Very hard for poets to be able to paint a picture in words! Cheers to a brilliant job!

This is extremely touching and I would argue that this should be a submission for the book collection as I've added it to mine
