“Where to?” I asked
as she settled into the passenger’s seat
and threw a foot up on the dash
in a posture of relaxed relent.

“You scare me.” She said,
“your eyes.”

I laughed and asked if she wanted
To head back towards Oklahoma,
And be rid of me.

“No.” she whispered,
“Head north and pick up 71.”
“there is one more place I want you to see.”

I pulled a map out of the glove box
And the letter fell to the floor.

She picked it up and read the outside,
Looked out the side window a moment
And then stuffed the letter back.
Before she closed the door,
She reached in her shirt pocket
And pulled out the bullet,
Tossing it as well inside.

“My mom taught me to take pictures.” She began,
“and her eye for the unusual view, the things others don’t see.”
“made me want to try.”

I listened as the story unfolded
And learned about family ties unknotted
About men… with heavy hands.

We picked up 71 about 4 that afternoon
And just past Rogers she told me to turn right.

The two-lane wound in sharp s turns
That left stone walled bluff on one side
And treetop drops on the other, leaving one
With the feeling of not quite.

Not quite anchored
Not quite free

“Turn left, next dirt road.” She said.

I missed it.
Two tire trails that hit the highway on a curve.
I turned around and headed back,
Found it, and felt the stomach floating sensation
Of driving off a cliff as the front end of the truck
Blocked the steep road below.

“Next fork, turn left.” She directed.

Among the pines and oak we wound
For what seemed miles but always in a curve
Of switch backed S’s sometimes so tight
You could saw the road just traveled as a twin
To the one you were now on.

“Slow down here.” She said with a sigh,
“and look for the old wooden gate on the right.”
“I’ll open it.”

I did as she said, wondering where indeed we were
As well as what it was she was going to show me this time.

She found the gate, opened it and we turned into
An even rougher track that wound down washboard grades
Until we came to a clearing and a small stone house.

“We’re here.” She said
“Park at the side of the house”

“Where, exactly are we?” I asked.

“My place.” She answered
“You unload things, I’ll go see what I can fix to eat.”

I untied the tarp and
Lugged her gear onto the porch
Tossed the tarp back and secured it.
Then stood and watched as the sun
Met the top of high ridge surround
And was refracted by the water in my eyes
Into arms of rainbow color

“Come on in.” she yelled,
“and have a cold one.”

“I’ve got bacon and scrambled on the stove.”

Somewhere off in the hills surrounding
I heard an owl… in early rise,
call an echo
To his mate

As always you leave me wanting more...is it inherent?

For a moment, I thought I had lapsed
into the deep of winter,
and was with Scrooge...

but no...

I'm with a storyteller...

Susan: Inherent? ( chuckling) by design I admit..to leave the story with an unanswered question in the readers mind. I hope  it allows the reader that might follow such puny offerings as mine..the opportunity to build on their won..fill in the blanks...and become curious about something... and the something doesn't have to be the characters or the unanswered question..perhaps it is something that sparked off a line or an image and is personal to them.... appreciate your reading..and taking time to say something.. thank you.

Brad: I try bud..I try..( chuckling) Thanks for the reply... much apprecaited sir.

Noah.. we'll see where it all goes...or if they just sit now in the cabin a while and everyone else catches up with them...
always appreciate you comments sir.. always.

Sunshine: Scrooge on 71 heading north huh..
well Eureka lies to the east a ways...along with the White river. Even Scrooge might like it there...except for those darned hills... almost seem to grow up like the trees... no inlcine... just a verticle rise.

Re: Scorpio....no, you are just quite humble....how refreshing

Great continuing story. I like these lines a lot!:

"........as the sun
Met the top of high ridge surround
And was refracted by the water in my eyes
Into arms of rainbow color" (hope I didn't misquote it).. that happens!!!

You simply don't miss the tiniest details. And that is what makes these so enjoyable to read. Whew! I feel like I've been on a trip...didn't even have to leave home....

Great love story developing, or not, that is the question....

Thanks for sharing these with us.
Pat

what you did with the imagery in this is just so very very cool...I need motion sickness pills from the ride you just took me on....

Ahh, now, you took me back 45 years to the times I roamed those Boston Mountains in a 1950 Mercury coupe. All those roads from Devil's Den, Siloam and back down the goat trail. Thank you, you brought back many smiles this day...gentle smile
