I watched her work
Until the night of driving caught me
And I dozed off
Stretched on the grass
Behind her

“Get up, let’s go.” She said
as she was packing her gear
cameras into nylon bags padded well
tripods into ripcord

It was almost dark
Just a faint glow of red
Lay on the western hills
And off to the south
One could see flashes of light
From a yet unseen storm

“I want to head north.” She said
“we can be in the Boston Mountains
in couple of hours.”

I loaded her bags into the truck
Pulled the tarp up over them
And tied it carefully

She crawled into the passenger’s seat
And sat looking straight ahead
With a half pouting purse to her lips.

“Something bugging you?”
I asked her as I turned the key
And the old truck fired.

“No.” was her answer

“Sure looks like it on your face.”
I offered and turned the truck around
Heading its nose back the way we had come.

“Go down here and hit 278.”
Was her only reply.

Later as we drove
The clouds caught us and lightning
Streaked from one side of the sky
To the other in jagged limb like forms.

We made Cass around 9
And found the only place to stay
Had one room and no place to eat.

I gave her the room key
Grabbed my sleeping bag out of the back
Just as the rain began

“You can sleep on the floor.” She offered.

“I’ll be fine here in the cab.” I replied.

Sometime around 3 AM
She was pecking on the window.

“Let’s go,” she whispered “I have someplace to show you.”

“I need coffee.” Was about all I could mumble

“Up the road.” She said

I got my sleeping bag stowed
The tarp retied and most of the sleep
Rubbed out of my eyes
Before she was tapping her foot
Urging me to hurry.

I got in and closed my door,
Turned the key
And noticed her staring again
Same pouting lips  pursed
As if she had just chewed something bitter.

“Who’s Iambe?”
she finally asked.

“A ghost.” I said
“just a ghost”

and I do so enjoy the way she haunts your pen. if one must be haunted...at least some damn fine poetry will come of it.
