Buffalo Grove

Jake wanted to check out some horses up north,
so we headed out after breakfast.

I slid into the corner
the truck seat made with the door
and propped my arm up
on the open window,
the wind,
whipping my hair
against my face.
The sting felt good,
and I made no effort to deflect it.
I lifted my boot to the dash,
closed my eyes to the sun and
thought about Katy,
‘cause women were what I thought about
when I didn’t wanna think.

It wasn’t long before the rhythm
of the wheels on blacktop
rocked me to sleep.

… … … …

Jake glanced over at Jackson ...
feet up on the dash, hat pulled down over
his eyes, that kid could sleep anywhere.
Just before dozing off he said something about
Katy and her eggs being just the remedy for a
cowboy with a hangover and heartache.

Jake hoped Jackson wasn't becoming too
attached to her, he had a history of wanting
women who weren't his to have, and a weakness
for blondes who belonged to someone else.
Not that Kate belonged to anyone.

Jake's own thoughts turned to Kate.
Everyone else called her Katy 'cept Jake.
He had always said she was too much woman
to answer to a little girl's name. Jake had
never told anyone, not even Travis
how he felt about Kate. For that matter,
he hadn't told her either. Some things were
just understood even if left unspoken.

Travis had found healing in Kate's arms and
cooking for a time too, though both knew it was a
lame attempt by Travis to take his mind off Iambe.
In each man's life, there was that one woman
who made him rethink all he had ever planned on.

Iambe was that woman to Travis, Kate was that woman
for Jake, for that matter she had been that woman for
many a man, but she had been hurt one time too many
by a cowboy just passing through and had decided a
long time ago, she'd never wear one man's brand.

Jake's thoughts of Kate were interrupted by Jackson
talking in his sleep and thrashing around. Again causing
Jake to wonder what it was that had the kid so restless.
They had all been dealing with their own demons since the
news of old man Konrad's passing, but Jake's family's skeletons
in the closet shouldn't be haunting Jackson. Just then the kid
called out in his sleep again, Jake shook him awake.
They were almost to the ranch anyway, and Jake was
looking for conversation to distract him from his own thoughts.

… … … …

Sometime around noon, I felt a hand, rough
against my shoulder.

‘Wake up kid’

‘We there?’, I asked, barely roused.

‘No, not yet.
You were talkin’ in your sleep.
Who’s Clayton?’

‘My old man, why?’

‘You were talkin’ to him.’

‘Not likely.’

‘Why’s that?’

‘Never met him, that’s why.’

We got to the ranch and Jake had him a look around,
just casual though,
his mind seemed to be somewhere else.
It was then I noticed,
that he hadn’t hooked up the horse trailer
before we left.
Maybe he’d just needed to take a ride.

At the end of the drive, Jake stopped the truck,
looked left, then right.

‘Well kid.  We can head back to my place,
or we can make a right outta here,
head up north a bit further
and you can tell me what you know about
Buffalo Grove.’

‘Don’t think I know it Jake.  But buy me a beer,
maybe somethin’ll come to me.’

So we turned right and I stared silently out the window,
knowing Jake would write off my moodiness
as havin’ to do with Katy,
and figurin’ it’d buy me some time
to figure this thing out myself, before I went
yackin’ to him and lookin’ like a damn fool
scared of his own dreams.
