I've heard the words before
not a line has changed
Same conversation except
its a different day

Oh how I wish
I could hear a lie
or something new
even made up
but, its the same conversation
except its a different day

The stories 25 years old
tired today as they were then
Stories of friends long gone
of happy times which need replacing

Of things we should have done
with only regrets to show
Or things we did
but now regret
The what if onlys

I hunger for new conversation
the gonna do's
gonna see's
a new line
a breath of fresh air

But I heard the words before
Stale as ever, mundane as always
Its the same conversation
except its another day

You captured much here. I can fully relate, only it is not with a spouse.

You know, I am curious just why this happens. Is it simply a lack of interest in one another, or interesting things done together, or even separately, but not explored together? This is a very real part of life with some.

Think this is well written and enjoyed and makes me think of my own situations.

Thanks.  Pat

this happens when you are not content with yourself.  Reinvent yourself and you'll have tons to talk about.. or for atleast another 25 years.

enjoyed the poem thank you

yep , one giant run on sentence,
blahblahblah, arent i exciting? anymore sweetheart? 25 years, yea, give me a break, anyone professing to have great conversation amongst other things, after all the years, is either, full of it for appearances sake,  in a coma, or selfdeluded, it happens in the BEST of marriages, its gets boring, why do we stay, lots of reasons

Crazy4u- I think it happens when you are in a rut or complacent or just dont give a damn anymore. We need to find new adventures, new places, new things.....when we are you the world is an exciting place, as we age we are tied to our jobs, our kids, our homes. I appreciate your kind words but I wish things are as easy as you want them to be.
To everybody else, thanks for the nice words and good thoughts. Keeps me wanting to participate a little more.

sweetheart, you ARE exciting alredy, it's that excess baggage that you have to carry around for a few more years that weighs you down, just keep growing on your own, you are becoming more poetic as the days roll by

I see exactly what you're getting at. When you've been with someone for so long and you do so many things , and talk of so many things together - after awhile it does begin to get a tad mundane. It's just like same ol' stuff just a different day- what's for dinner? The kids need diapers, How was work?
What'd you do today? We need this or that from the store..blah blah blah. The real conversations where you talk of your hopes and dreams , beliefs and possible future acomplishments seem to fall by the wayside with everyday life. Getting to know each other seems dull and old because you think you know your spouse so well...but you really don't. It's funny how you can be with someone for so long and really not KNOW who they truly are. People change with time. Perhaps you've grown apart , the both or one of you has changed. Which is not a bad thing depending on how you look at it- it could simply be an opportunity to get to know each other all over again. Don't give up-it's work, but if it's real- love is worth it.
