“I don’t know which is uglier,”
she was telling me as she handed
me first one picture then another,
“You, or your truck.”

“If I catch you at just the right angle.”
She smiled,” you don’t look so bad,”
“but face on, man, you take one ugly picture.”

I laughed, not offended at all for some reason
By this woman that was sitting across from me
Wearing the same jeans and faded shirt
Smelling slightly of sage smoke and sweat.

“Well,” I offered, “I didn’t ask you to waste the film.”

“WASTE THE FILM!!”
she shouted as heads turned to see
what the problem was
and her butt rose a foot off the booth bench

“You have no idea what wasting film is!”
was her indignant follow up,
“Those pictures are good, especially the ones of you.”

She reached into a backpack and fished out papers
“Here, sign this release and I’ll go WASTE someone else’s time.

I chuckled and waved at the barman
“Couple of shots of Jose if you would”

I took the papers and signed them
Handed her one of the shots
And said “To the depths of your vision.”
Slammed mine down and waited.

“What did you mean by that?” she asked.

“Well, it seemed pretty obvious to me
that you see beyond the surface when you photograph.”
I replied.

“I see you think you are pretty smooth.”
She answered.

“No Ma’am, I don’t, I’m nobody, but I know you’re good.”

“I’m going over into Arkansas tomorrow.”
She said with a laugh, “Want to go with me?”
“I can show you the dew of the Ozark Mountains”

I thought about it for a couple of seconds
And told her “Sure, what time you want to leave?”

“Now.” She said, “You drive.”

…………………………………………

Along the verdant valley far below the ridge
Along the winding highway, lies old Bowly’s bridge
I used to go there swimming in the summers sun
Had me one or two there when we were both too young

Can you meet me there at midnight on warm summer eve
Were the words promises or are they things we now must grieve
You told me that you’d love me and we would find a way
To  make old Bowly’s our private place to play

We can watch the sunrise and hear the cardinal sing
Drink some campfire coffee and not think of anything
Later we’ll go walking down along the banks
Lose ourselves in cedar that grow in crowded ranks

We’ll find the hidden hollow soft with cool green grass
Rest a while in shadows as we stare at Ringman’s pass
When our hearts have rested and the world has ceased its shove
We’ll find ourselves in sleeping bags wrapped in our sweet love.

“To the depths of your vision.”

A fitting toast to a photographer who sees beyond the surface...I could do the same to you, Ron...a poet who writes beyond the surface...salut..

believe in what your heart feels...

What I like about these stories of yours is how you manage to keep the story line plain and simple, ~ordinary~, and yet develop and build extraordinary characters all at the same time...not to mention for the tenth time probably, your ability to create the imagery and place us ~right there~, sites, sounds and smells.....
Such talent!
Love these. Thanks, Pat, oh, also the poem at the end...nice addition....

Lessee....not Siloam Springs, that's on the Arkansas side.....Most likely Salisaw, eh?

Good stuff -- I like the way you built the history without ever stating it directly....things like "Wearing the same jeans and faded shirt" when they hadn't been mentioned before.
