The Morning After

even the whispers
of this new morning are silent

I try to recall
other Valentine’s Days

when pseudo love peddled its wares
masqueraded as tender caring

as sweet passion, as fidelity of heart,
when crumpled sheets spoke of something,

something I can’t recall now,
but surely different than the tossing and turning

of late-night waking hours
that began to undress my bed, rocking the solemnity

and stillness a tandem, minus one, should bring,
when the waves made are merely my own making.

This morning, the “Happy Valentine’s Day” greeting
on the banner, outside, no longer flutters its wishes

rather, it clings, in tangled knots
about the pole as if it wrangled with the wind

and wind won, tying the salutations
into muted petitions, strangled pleas

robbing Eros of any chance
of slipping in

A morning after telling something about your expectations on a special day ..... but love does not recognize any "musts".
Sad but so well expressed!
.... may love knock on all the normal days and may you hear!

Thank you for your comments, all!

And, majnu, interesting take on this. I can't say I really know the meat of this one. It's been 2 decades since the other member of this union indicated all was pretense, indicated he didn't know what love was, when he made his promise. Well, none of us does know until love grows enough to be recognized beyond passion, beyond eros. I rejoice that eros cannot find its way here, I should not want it so until love does.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
