What do the blinking stars and opening and shutting folders mean?

i used to think it ment people are active in these areas, but now I am confused!Anth the grey and red folders too what are they

Hello, Wind..

A blinking star on the left margin of the forum means that someone has posted in that forum since your last visit.

As for the folders...

Opening/Closing - means that post is a new member's first post with our site.

Reddish Orange - means that someone has made a comment on that particular post since your last visit.

Yellow - means that no one has commented on that post since your last visit.

Grayish White - means that the last comment on the post was made by the originating member.

or in some cases, a white folder means someone with the same internet provider [usually in the same city] was the last to post in that topic.

ie. if brian [lp] started a thread, and i was the last to reply, it wouldn't get bumped and there would be a white folder. as the pip system recognizes anyone in winnipeg using shaw as the same user.

a nice little technical glitch.

other than that, all of those little details are really convenient.
