Essorant, while I don't agree with you that Islam is essentially a peaceful religion, or that it can be compared to the non-retaliation of New Testament Christianity, I agree with your statement above ... the caveat being that in the Arab nations, the most heinous actions are religious in nature, and in our nation, they are irreligious in nature (ie, based on a lost conception of Divine Law, and escalating despair and meaninglessness).
But that is (overall) the answer. The problem with the West is so much the doctrines of religion, but its abandonment of them. In terms you used earlier, it has pursued those things it is certain with, rather than challenging its doubts.
There is a role doubt plays in finding greater faith. There is also a role doubt plays in undermining it.
