Well, the article is certainly full of inflammatory language that would make a tea bagger's water hot, such as “terrifying bureaucratic plan”, “attempt by the Obama administration to seize control of the press”,“Venezuela’s nutball dictator”, “National Hispanic Media Coalition whined to the FCC”, “lefty groups” and the piece de resistance - “ In third world nations, the left would send troops or rioters to TV stations and newspapers to seize complete control of the media. Here they try to do it with the FCC and FTC.”  Hyperbole such as that makes me doubtful about credibility. Think I'll just chill and see what happens June 15th.

Rather than limiting ourselves to fulminating about the article that Denise suggests, why not actually real the paper that the article proports to be about and have a firm area of discussion to deal with in addition?  We may actually be able to make up our own minds about what it says instead of taking somebody else's word for it.

Judging by what’s been posted so far, Bob, just a link to a crappy article in the opening post, two cartoons, and a (fulminating) wait and see, seems to me no one’s shown much interest at this point in an in depth discussion. Also, the actual FTC discussion draft covers a lot of territory, (I did read it, btw).  I (and probably others) don’t have time to tackle it as a whole right now. Perhaps picking a point or two to work on might spark a discussion? Just a thought.

Good point, Bob.  We've seen more than a few times how many of these articles "reporting" what is in some document can't be trusted.  You either read the document or you most likely get a bunch of exaggerations, myths, and lies about what the document is about.

Here's an article that I thought summed it up well.

Sorry Bob, I don't go to .gov sites anymore. It's too bothersome deleting cookies all the time, on the outside chance they are placing them on computers.

Have you read the actual discussion draft, Denise, or just articles about it?

If you haven't read the actual draft, Denise, and don't want to go to the government site, I'd be willing to copy it and send it to you. Just let me know.

It is only a .pdf file, how can a cookie come from that?

I've read more of it than Obama, Holder and Napolitano had read of the Arizona Illegal Immigration Law before they started trashing it and threatening lawsuits!

I've just read excerpts in news articles and commentary. Don't like anything I've read so far. If the rest of the items in it are anything like what I have read so far, involving government subsidies for certain news organizations, etc., I am dead set against it, being the small government type of person that I am.

Sure you can email me the draft. Please just make sure it is a copy and paste though. I won't click on those links.

There is suspicion, Ess, that the government has started using cookies at some of their sites when you access them, since they were trying to get approval to do so many months back. Haven't heard anything else about it so who knows if they got permission or not? Information seems to be getting harder to come by lately. Google isn't what it used to be. I deleted all my cookies after I heard that they were trying to do that, and I don't want the inconvenience of having to re-register my computer with all of my personal sites that I go to.

Yes, and I know, just about every site you visit puts cookies on your computer. I just don't want the government doing it.

Maybe Grinch or Ron or the Cookie Monster could let you know if there are any cookies that come from clicking on Bob's link.

I don't check on mine, truth be told.  I wouldn't have any idea.  I do have a Mac, though these days I don't know that's much protection against malware, etc., and cookies slip onto almost everything.  So, caveat emptor.  My computer runs well, and I don't open attachments, since one example tried to sell me MS Office and wouldn't let me go for months.

I shiver to think of it.

Ironically Ess the site that Bob linked to is the only one on this page that doesn’t use cookies.

You can test it yourself, simply change your browser privacy settings to "prompt" before downloading cookies and then visit the site – you can use this link that does use cookies to prove that it works:

Why mess about cutting and pasting Jen – it’s a pdf file and only 328k in size. Anyone can right click the link and select “Save target as” and stick it on their hard drive if they don’t want to load the file in their browser direct from the site.

Thanks for the computer info Grinch. Good to know. I just get very leary now whenever I see a .gov link.

I'm glad I bought aspirin today, Jen. I certainly needed them after reading that! But thanks again for doing all that copying and pasting for me. I appreciate the effort.

I'm still of the opinion, though, that the government should stay out of the news (online and radio) and newspaper print business. Subsidies for this, tax breaks for that, taxes on this to help fund that yadda, yadda, yadda. I say, as with any other business, sink or swim in the free market system, with as few government regulatons as absolutely necessary.

I think the entire tax code should be scrapped as well, but that's another topic.

I can understand your concern regarding cookies Denise, some of them aren’t very nice at all – like the ones used at Fox News for instance which collect your data to be distributed to anyone that Fox thinks might like to know it and who’ll pay good money to get it. Some of them on the other hand are very useful, like the cookies here at PIP that store information regarding your account to make your visits a little more pleasant.

US Government sites however, as you pointed out yourself in another thread, don’t use cookies of either variety, so your fear of cookies at those sites seems, if you don't mind me saying, a tad irrational.

I don't know for a fact that none of the .gov sites don't use cookies, Grinch. I would have to check that out myself to be certain of that.

Now I have a problem though that maybe you can help me out with if you could. Once I changed my settings to check that fox link and others and then changed them back again (several times and even rebooted) I can no longer get into my facebook account. It keeps telling me that my cookies are disabled and to enable them in my privacy settings in my browser. Any suggestions?

Internet Explorer. I think I fixed it just now. I changed it from the setting of Medium, where it was, to Low (accept ALL cookies) and now at least I can get into facebook again. Let me see now if I am working okay here.

I am okay now, Grinch. Thanks. I don't know why I had to change my settings from Medium to Low when they had always been set at Medium before. Oh well, at least I am working again!

You shouldn’t be setting anything to ‘low’ Denise.

In the browser go to HELP on the toolbar at the top and click ABOUT.

That’ll show you the version of IE you’re running.

If it’s IE7 click OK then, once back in the browser, go to TOOLS then INTERNET OPTIONS and select the SECURITY tab -  click the button that says DEFAULT LEVEL.
Then click the tab that says PRIVACY and click the button that’s marked DEFAULT.
Click APPLY and then OK then close the browser and re-open it.

If you’re not running IE7 the above instructions may be different – let me know how you get on.

The football has just kicked off so I'll check back in 90 minutes or so.

1-0 btw.

I have IE8, but was able to follow the same directions as for IE7.  Both defaulted to Medium-High. Now I can't get into facebook again.

Ooops, Security defaulted to Medium-High and Privacy defaulted to Medium. I think my cookies are messed up here again too. I just had to manually enter my username and password when I came in here to edit.

Okay, I left my Security at Medium-High and changed my Privacy back down to Accept ALL cookies, and now I can get back into facebook and things are working here again. Is there something else that maybe I should try instead?

What's the score now?

That should be fine Denise.

The final score was England 1 USA 1

The US played very well indeed, they have some good players.

No Denise, there are a few others, cricket and rugby for instance.

I actually prefer draws as long as both teams give it their all – a draw lends itself to my sense of fair play I guess – it’s not the winning it’s the taking part so to speak.

Maybe there should just be no competitions. Then there would be no losers....or no winners. No one would have to push themselves to be the best or even be successful. We could all be...the same.

The only concern I had about cookies was that I didn't want the government placing cookies on my computer...Big Brother and all that. But I don't, as a rule, visit the Fox website anyway. It takes too long to load for me, and I don't particularly care for the layout.

What did you think Big Brother might do to you, steal your identity, max out your credit cards, switch your voting registration to Dem? But then again, Handmaid's tale and all that. So glad Bush never read that book along with the Camus and the "three Shakespeares".
