Your posts are very much missed, Grinch, gold nuggets gleaming among the rubble.

Do death panels come in other than 6' X 8", and what other finishes than the standard Mahogany and cherrywood?

Bob,
As far as I know, death panels come in three more additional types:

Trickledown Brown,
R-U Goneyet-65 - special composite polymer
and
Balsa (for the uninsured)

I can only dream - balsa would be a huge step up from pressure treated recycled TP.

Nice one, Jeff. Made me smile.

Dear Threadbear,

I would say that I wish that I'd said those, but you should be encouraged with the probability that I, in all likelyhood, will.

And yes, Jenn, I am off to the races.  I think I need some rest from the unremitting seriousness and high spatter factor of a lot of the posts around here, including, sadly, my own, and there's nothing better for that than the occasional terrible pun or wretched joke in exactly the wrong place.

This is the sort of time when people tend to roll their eyes at me, or stare blankly when my latest unfunny joke walks right by them, saying something completely off the subject and usually flatly unfunny to anybody else but me.

     Heard about the three farmers?

     Hoe, Hoe, Hoe!

The three holes in the ground?

     Well, Well. Well!

     The three old men?

     He, He. He!!!

And they'll go downhill from there.  Those were my best!  I promise!

just a reminder, folks, that under the new proposed Fair Broadcasting laws:

Section 22.34
Posting on blogs, while under the influence, or P.U.I., carries a Class 'C' misdemeanor charge.

(punishable by 6 months Mandatory Posting on a Miley Cyrus blog, no parole.)

6 months posting on a Miley Cyrus Blog is unconstitutional.  Nobody has a constitution strong enough to tolerate that sort of punishment.

It's also cruel and too usual.

Crewl is a kind of needlework as well, threadbare.  Crewl and too usual is the sort of joke that, like surgery, could well leave you in stitches.

Aren't IRS Mortality Tables the same thing
as a Death Panel?

     Don't think so.

The original social security plan was a retirement suppliment that assumed that people wouldn't outlive their retirement by much more than a year or two.  It was to make sure that they wouldn't be thrown out of their houses and not have food to eat during that time as a suppliment to savings and to whatever retirement plans they'd already had.  Given the rapacious state of the economy at that point, people weree thrilled to have it.

The current state of the insurance industry is a much better example of your death panel fantasy.  The insurance industry has been permitted to advertise plans that are competitive with medicare.  They advertise these plans as being better, yet provide medicare level benefits minus a hefty profit margin for the companies which shows up in changes of services that show up only after  the folks join the program.  Medications which are not the prescribed medication, or are the prescribed medications but in doeses that are not the same or are in only formulary provided substitutions which may have side-effects that aren't there in the originals.  Care which does not porovide options that have been provided for, but which has now been altered and so on.  The difference in the money goes not into payouts in services or effeciences in the pans but often in larger profits to the management of the plans.

Those would be more my notion of death panels.  We enter into an agreeement in good faith on one side only.  You are locked into it legally.  If you don't like it, you may have a right to legal recourse which in the meantime we will try to curtail by pushing for legiuslation on "tort reform," so that "excessive judgements" will be a thing of the past.  We may then absorb them as part of the cost of doing business without having to alter rapacious business practices.

A certain number of you will die before you actually do pursue legal recourse.  Some of you will be too confusaed to do so by virtue of having the medicine and treatment necessary for your maintanence of function altered by changes to our formulary and by changes to the treatments we allow our patients to receive as part of our services.  If you can pay for good supplimental insurance or can afford the governmental supplimental inbsurance, or if you are in good health, there is no problem.  If not, you really have no recourse; you have become effectively disenfranchised.  Your function is that of a cash cow.

The more difficult it becomes for people to gain access to government funded health plans and govrrnment funed part D insurance, the more money for the insurance companies.  If they are allowed to advertise at all, they ought to have really honking HUGE penalties for each case where there is any misleading or false advertising, especially those which lead to fatalities.

This would never actually happen, but it ought to happen.
