Authorities in Saudi Arabia have defended a judicial sentence of 200 lashes for a rape victim.
The justice ministry said in a statement that the sentence was justified because the woman was in a car with an unrelated man.
The case has aroused controversy at home and condemnation abroad.
US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton said the sentence was an outrage and urged President Bush to put pressure on Saudi King Abdullah.
The 19-year-old, who has not been named, was travelling in a car with a male friend last year, when the car was attacked by a gang of seven men who raped both of them.

She has become known as the "Qatif girl", a reference to the largely Shia town which she comes from.
Four of the men were convicted of kidnapping - but the court also sentenced the woman and her friend to receive 90 lashes each for the crime of "illegal mingling".
Last week the court increased the woman's sentence to 200 lashes and six months in prison.
It also banned her lawyer from the courtroom and took away his licence.

"The Bush administration has refused to condemn the sentence and said it will not protest against an internal Saudi decision. I urge President Bush to call on King Abdullah to cancel the ruling and drop all charges against this woman. As president I will once again make human rights an American priority around the world." .......Hillary (who else?)

From the Hillary playbook....."Throw whatever you can at Bush and tell how you will make things different as President." (Has she heard about Darfur yet?)

Next week Hillary will tell why the Miami Dolphins' 0-10 start is Bush's fault and how she could make them Super Bowl champions as president.

Face it,
the politicians of today  are no different
from those two thousand years ago;
they view us as the mob,
idiots.

I kept waiting for the punch line, Mike.

Big buildup. Indeed, a truly frightening buildup for anyone who cares about the rights of women around the globe. And then? What?

That someone who wants to be President feels its our place to tell everyone else how they should live is probably relevant. It's exactly the kind of thing, I think, that should help determine how one votes.

But that doesn't appear to be your point? Your point, if I read it right, and seemingly your only complaint, is that someone criticized President Bush?

An excellent question, Ron. Yes, there were several points in posting this...the first being Hillary jumping on it for vote-getting purposes. One could easily condemn the Saudi government without bringing Bush into it for political reasons. Do you think that if there were a Democrat in the oval office she would have done the same? Of course not. Not even the other Democrat wanna-be's went down that road. It's just another case of Hillary immediately jumping on any topic available to criticize Bush and show how SHE, as president, would do things differently. It would be interesting to see how she really WOULD handle the situation as madame president. Msybe three "shame on you"'s and a finger wag?

Another point is the nature of what we are dealing with over there. These are the people we are discussing human rights with. These are our "allies" that we count on for support. These are the people who were aghast at Abu Ghrab. Where is the condemnation from the Moslem world? WHere are the news headlines in Al-Jazz exposing such an atrocity? Make fun of a Moslen terrorist? Heartless, cruel and inhumane. Publish cartoons poking fun at them? Mass protests and riots. Beat a woman with a whip 200 times for being raped? No big deal, I suppose, and if the rest of the world can't accept it...tough camel dung.

It is important to understand the true nature of friend...and enemies.....and Hillary.

Sir Huan, who is "us"? US is a mob and politician is head of mob and bigger idiot.

We have our views of the world and politicians happened to share something similar with us.

Have you ever wanted to be a president? I do. So I could run the world(esp as US president) my way. (don't even judge if my way were good or evil)

And Sir Balladeer,  you ignored Ron's question. Here I ask it my way. So is your moral ground not right and wrong but Republican and democrat?

Billy Graham has a rule that he would never dine along with a woman.  You know what, sir Balladeer, Hillary made him break his rule. When I read this half decade ago in his Autobiography, I could not help saying that "wow, she was evil" .

If she has made Billy Graham breaking his own rule, I think that she has a big chance to win the election because she does own some kind of strange power.

so, sir, I say that you'd better be prepared to get angry and for the sick of your health, give up the angry.

and

If she put human right as first priority when she was president. She would A-bomb 360 degree. Scary.

"As president I will once again make human rights an American priority around the world."

Really? Then perhaps she needs to educate herself on the Saudi Arabian version of the UDHR: The Cairo Declaration of Human Rights in Islam (CDHRI).Wiki

"an alternative document that says people only have "freedom and right to a dignified life in accordance with the Islamic Shari’ah"

Our priority: "c[an] not be implemented by Muslims without trespassing the Islamic law.[6]

So she will make the laws for Saudis?

I hate hate hate what's happening to that poor girl, but Hill can do nothing but pray for her, like the rest of us.
