.

I’m  sick of it.

So often on E-Bay
I see two men or women
in a portrait from a war
and because one has his/her arm over
the other there’s the assumption
of some sexual interest.

Please raise your hands
those who actually believe
men, or women, enlist in a time of war
because they couldn’t find sex
in their own home country.

Please raise your hands
those who believe that a man
can not love a man like a brother
and be willing to die for him
without thinking for a moment
if he would be good in bed.

It is obscene
to believe that they,
(and since they are the best, we),
are no more than animals.

What idiots
perpetrate this crime?

John

Sad indeed. Going by that premise: all football players and I guess baseball players and why not throw in the hockey and soccer and basketball players, are gay. Indeed!  Narrow little minds have nothing better on which to mediate. "late"

  there’s the assumption
of some sexual interest.

I'm not quite sure what you mean here...like who is assuming this? I have never heard of this before. Why would someone assume that two people were involved in a sexual relationship with each other simply because they were pictured together? When I see someone in a photo with their dog I don't assume there is something illegal taking place!

Uh, I can't say I know what you're talking about.

I can say that

'It is obscene
to believe that they,
(and since they are the best, we),
are no more than animals.'

is extremely offensive and it seems like you would like to protest gay interests in general. Besides, even if people in the armed forces are hooking up- what do you care? Or does it tarnish your image of the heroes, now reduced to "animals" because of their carnal lust?

I don't pretend to know what soldiers on the battlefield go through, and much like men (and women) in prison, if they find affection and love outside of their normal preferences in extenuating circumstances, who am I to judge?

What's more, if it is the case (and I don't see why you care whether it is or not) what business is it of yours?

John is not protesting anything about being "gay" itself, but about the assumption that two people are "gay" just because they are of the same gender and show great affection to each other.   I find this attitude among people as well.  Two people of the same gender and similar age, especially men, may hardly express love and affection to each other anymore without a bunch of people disrespectfully presuming or fancying that they are "homosexual".

I think there's just a general interest in sexuality.

Hetero or homo--who cares? (If the photo were a man and a woman--the sexual tension is still a subjective implication.)

There's a story behind every photo, and I think the inclination to imagine the possibilities is natural. And like hush--I have to wonder why that bothers you... ?

.

I don't care for the past
being distorted by the present.
I don't care for the exclusion
of the possibility of comradeship
without sexual content,
(just think how "Band of Brothers"
could then be construed).  I resent
it because I too was once a soldier.

There’s an episode in the Simpsons
where Bart hugs his grandfather
who has just saved his life
and one of two in a car passing by
yells to the effect:  “ Hey fun boys,
get a room.”

I resent that.

Arthur Waley commented on it
to the effect that in Chinese poetry
the emphasis was on recommending oneself
as a friend because unlike in Western culture
sex, (through brothels, etc ), was so readily available
as to be of no interest as a subject or
cultural focus.

“If sex were all
Then every trembling hand
Could make us squeak like dolls
The wished for words”

Wallace Stevens

Well lovie--I'm not saying it is "right"--I"m just pointing out it that it is the general consensus.

I could be reading you wrong though, but I thought I sensed some underlying resentment at the thought.

I am quite often wrong though. But I suspect that times of stress can produce an intimacy--quite often mistaken for sexual proclivity/intimation.

If that was the case with you, I'd apologize if I were guilty. But more often than not, I assume intimacy before a sexual pronouncement.

I grew.

Personally I feel that being bi-sexual would be the normal. The reason I say this is that I feel that what we fall in love with (mostly) is the soul of a person and not the "plumbing." And seeing that the soul has no gender, it is irrelevent then what the exterior appears to be.

I agree with moondogz last post.

I understood the poem, and the protest it was trying to get across yet have never come across the "Label" of homosexuality in photos described within.
