Where no tyranny is tolerable

Could someone explain the Canadian elections to an interested but rather confused American?  What I find on the Internet seems not to make much sinse.  Is it rather disorienting to have elections willy nilly instead of at regular intervals!  Do Liberal and Conservative have the same or different meaning in Canada than they do in the United States?  We have different cultures and traditions and yet so very many things in common.  It is truly abysmal how little knowledge and interest there is here about Canada and what happens there, except when there is a constitutional crisis or an airline disaster. It's Disgusting really, since we hold so much in common ...  What is the fuss over Paul Martin?
Who are the "New Democrats?"
I am so confused! ...
The whole world is spinning!!! ...
O, Mysteria ... Save me! Save me!

He tried to show them that the world was round and he spun about vigorously on his feet to drive home his point.

The official term is five years, however, the Prime Minister can call an election any time he chooses. If a PM feels there is overwhelming support for his party he can call an election earlier, this would not only extend his own term, but could help get more of his party's MPs into the House of Commons.(Senate)

Financial scandals within the Liberal party weakened support and while they won the last election, it was not a majority government. This paved the way for a vote of no-confidence by their opposition which is why the current election is being held ahead of schedule.

There are 4 major political parties. Liberals, Conservatives, New Democrats and the Bloc Québécois.

The Liberal and Conservative parties essentially hold the same goals and platforms as their American counterparts. The New Democrats are essentially, a socialist party and the....Bloc Québécois' platform is to promote soveriegnty for the province of Quebec(groans)

Hope that clears some of it up, or have i made things worse?
