***NEWS FLASH***  as reported about two hours ago, from Science & Nature news:

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- House Republican leaders have unexpectedly agreed to remove a proposal allowing oil drilling in an Alaskan wildlife refuge from a pending budget bill.

The GOP leaders agreed late Wednesday to strip the proposal from a $54 billion budget-cutting measure -- a move seen as a defeat for President Bush, who earlier this week applied pressure to Republicans to save the proposal and who even tried wooing conservative Democrats, the Washington Post reported.

Not only didn`t the Democrats accede to the president`s wishes, but at least 22 Republicans told the House leadership they would not vote for the budget bill unless the drilling provision was removed, the Post said.

The budget measure, even without the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge oil drilling proposal, is controversial since it would allow states to increase fees for Medicaid recipients, cut monies for student loans and child support enforcement, reduce farm supports and further restrict access to food stamps.

*well, it just goes to showya
ya win some ya lose some
but we shall overcome, some day
eh?
WE HIRED THEM, and all those government employees are paid to work FOR the people...and we shall surely FIRE THEM if they dare give themselves raises while they take away food and medical benefits from needy families

(smiles) Though I don't think ANWR is off the agenda yet by all means, this is indeed quite a breath of relief for our vast pristine wilderness and for sustainability!

I think 2006 will be a decisive year for the future of ANWR. Many Congressional races will take place next year, and historically because the Democrats used to have control of the House, it was because of that that arctic drilling was out of the question. There are many moderate Republicans who question the long-term benefits of ANWR drilling like John McCain and Olympia Snowe as well, so the battle is afr from over but earlier this week was good news by all means!
