Have you tried putting something else in your mouth? *wicked grin*

Just a suggestion from a fellow oral retentive.

(But seriously? My mother kicked a forty year habit by cutting straws to cigarette length--it didn't work for me, but I thought you might like to give that a try.)

Get well soon m'lady. *smooch*

I chewed a whole box of straws, went backpacking for three days with a non-smoker who put up with my total bitchiness, and ate two pounds of sugar free YUCK candies. LOL, but it worked, I had quit a two pack a day habit, never took it up again, and that was 19 years ago!
I also made it a habit to compliment myself daily on being a NONSMOKER who SMELLED good. LOL.
I'll wish you healing thoughts, and keep my fingers crossed for you!

Maree,

I LOVE to smoke and that has been one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.
(about six or seven times)

So, yes, you have reason to be proud of yourself, you are TRYING to make a difference and yes, the chest infections just keep coming  . . . it will be the best thing you have done, you will be so proud of yourself and the complete loss of sense of self is normal.

I walked around for weeks feeling lost . .  can you believe that?  Checking the places where I kept my smokes all the time not knowing what to do with myself.  It was awful . . . but I used the patches, they worked great . . . that is the only thing that kept me away.

Of course I went back . . . but I just kept trying again.  (Good Lord, I was a MONSTER during that time)

Good Luck and think of those who love you and most importantly, yourself  and don't beat yourself up for falling back . . . just try again . . .

I am very proud of you.  Smoking is so very hard to beat.

As I type this, I cannot help but think of my younger brother and his increasing problems with emphysema.  I don't need to tell you, honey, what you should do - you will do it if you want to.

Just "want to" before it bites you even harder than you could ever realize, baby...

And as was said above? The fact that you are TRYING is good enough reason for me to say, I'm proud of you - and I know you can do it, when you are ready to. You've got the bull by the horns now, bella...hang on and ride this one to the end.

Then with the $$$ you've saved? Go out and splurge on something decadant...like CHOCOLATE...LOL...

hugs,

Mama K

Maree...I had to stop, first because I had a flu and stopped temporarily..then cheated when visiting friends who smoked and offered them to me..so I went and bought a pack and carried it with me  and then of course I began smoking more. One day stress and smoking gave me( and my throat being a weak spot) laryngitus...for a year~~~~ no matter what I tried to do it  wouldn't get better until I had to go to a speech therapist at Easter Seal where most there  had voice boxes removed due to cancer of the larynx...anyway it took me lots of money, drs and  time and exercises to regain my voice. I stopped smoking, and ate red licorice sticks since they could be held between fingers and filled the need of anything going into the mouth. (the habit)

Only problem is you will gain weight when you first stop smoking. Even without eating candy or licorice. I gained 15 pounds in a month..some was my body finally maturing at the age of 30 and the rest was due to my metabolism slowing down and contentment.

Smoking ingredients keeps your metabolic rate higher and it works off weight by keeping you fidgity and moving..or at least that was what I was told.

Try small pretzel sticks or something less fattening...and  good luck if you wish to stop because only you can do that..none of us can convince you...you have to want to
(besides as an afterthought..I know what  lung cancer does to someone... having lived with my sister's last days of it)

You are not weak, you are human. (That was redundant)

I don't drink anymore or else I would smoke 2 packs a night.

The fact that you realize that smoking is an issue is huge.
Stop beating yourself up and what WE (or anyone else thinks) doesn't matter, YOU do.

a thousand words --

the important thing is to not think that if you've had a cig that you've failed -- you can start quitting right back up.

personally haven't had a cigar in maybe 6 months -- not because I was intentionally quitting -- there just isn't any craving associated with cigar smoking -- nor inhaling -- but I've helped people with weight and training issues quite a bit -- and if people can overcome food addictions and still have to eat -- then you can overcome this one if it's what you want..

glad you're working on it

Oh did I love my smokes, and even I quit!  Although I gained a bit of weight. (a bit she says winking) I am not sorry I quit.  I hate the smell of them now but at the same time wanting one, but that lasts only a few seconds.  What gets me now is the smell of the people who smoke, and I can't believe I ever tried to "sneak" one, as the smell sticks on their clothes and hair all darn day and I was the same, LOL!

Hang in there, and reward yourself at the end of each day.  Do it day by day Marie, just one day at a time.  Been about 5 years now for me I think, as you get to a point you don't count when it's finally over.   I hate to tell you that I was like Mike, quit tons of times, but when you are ready you will quit, and I guess I was ready.  Hope you make it!

Non-smokers don't get "this" but nicotene is right up there in being one of the hardest drug to kick and withdraw from.

Good luck and cut yourself some slack - take it one day at a time.

You may also set a strong example for your friends by not smoking anymore.  If you stop they may too

Better yet, think of your son without a mother.
