I received this from the International Fund for Animal Welfare, in which I participate. I know there are many of you who have professed to be very concerned wiht this topic and I urge anyone interested to read and sign the petition. Thank you..
Dear Michael,

We've all seen the baby harp seal pictures -- adorable
dark eyes staring out at us benevolently from pillowy
white fur. But cruelty season is fast-approaching in
Canada. Sign the petition: http://www.care2.com/go/z/21459

In a month's time, hunters armed with clubs and rifles
will bludgeon and shoot to death hundreds of thousands of
baby harp seals out on the ice floes of Eastern Canada.
Shockingly, at least 95% of the seals killed will be less
than three months old and more than 40% may be skinned
alive.

Canada's seal hunt is the largest deliberate slaughter of
marine mammals in the world.  The government has set a
legal quota of up to 319,500 seals this year. The seal
pelts are served up to the fashion industry, with
additional profits from meat, oil, and the sale of
genitalia to Asian markets. But the killing of baby seals
doesn't make sense economically or ecologically, nor is
it sustainable.

The Canadian government wants the media and public to
believe that no one cares about the innocent blood spilled
each year. That's why we must create a public outcry!

Tell the Canadian Parliament that you DO CARE about the
cruelty inflicted upon these seals and that the hunt is
indefensible!

Sign the petition: http://www.care2.com/go/z/21459

Hey Balladeer, bless you for speaking out for these innocent seals, and against this proposed act of slaughter against tens of thousands of them.

It's exactly how you titled it as. Slaughter on Mother Nature. We are all God's people and creations, and we should be treating seals among all other creations as our brothers, sisters and relatives.

Edward Munch said, "Nature is not only all that is visible to the eye...it also includes the inner pictures of the soul." (sad sigh) My feelings for protecting all other species of the world run in the same vein as my feelings in preserving our environment and last remaining old-growth forests. My greatest fear is if we were to wake up years from now and find we've lost it all, all that remains is the stinging plague of regret. We can stop this from happening, but we need all the support as possible.

There is no economic benefit to the killing of animals as there is for cutting down trees. We must also encourage the critical issue of sustainability, education of why our environment is so important to protect, and the need to propose alternative methods for providing the young with food, clothing, fuel, etc. which would prove far more economical.

Vincent van Gogh once said, "It is not the language of painters but the language of nature which one should listen to, the feeling for the things themselves, for reality, is more important than the feeling for pictures."

Let's see to it, hope, and promise the children of tomorrow that they can see these precious seals just as we have right before their very eyes, and not just in a photograph.

God Bless You, Michael! I will spread the word among other communities!

Sincerely,
Noah Eaton

Wow, look at that! 29,129 signatures! Only 871 more are needed to accomplish their goal!

Let's run this final sprint, everyone! Please add your support as well!

Thank you!

Noah Eaton

Mike,

They’re not killing them for fun.  If there wasn’t
money in it they wouldn’t bother.  What are the pelts
used for and who’s buying them?

John, of course there's money in it. There is also money in heroin. WHo will buy it? The same people who buy the heroin. Ivory has been banned for years in certain parts of Africa due to the indescriminate slaughter of elephants to obtain it. There is still a thriving black market for it.

Poachers I can understand......governments? No.

I'm in, I'll sign as should everybody!!!

Killing these baby seals is absurd and beyond any norms and values of the modern time. Nobody needs a fur coat today in this world.

Thanks my friend for bringing this to our attention.

Thanks, Michael. Sadly, I remember petitioning for this very thing many many years ago, when I was active with Greenpeace and WWF. It seems this dastardly deed has managed to resurrect itself.
Thanks for providing the link, and yes, I did sign.

Today is a tragic day for those poor, innocent, defenseless seals.

A new slaughter is beginning in Newfoundland, where approximately 200,000 seals live.

You can see exactly how tragic the killing of these innocent creatures, many of them babies, are in this video:

As an optional, you can also make a contribution to IFAW in their effort to stop this massive hunt:

Signed and sent the link to friends. What's even more horrifying are all the other petitions on the site for various other needless killings.

Sickening.

I do not typically do "causes" because of some internal and long held thoughts, however I do not ever see the need for senseless slaughter of creatures that have no intrinsic value other than furs. (OK, OK... so my spelling sucks).
Consider me as added.

I am so very touched by all the support coming in in defense of these seals, just as I'm sure our Balladeer is who first brought this issue to light here.

You're absolutely right, Ringo, there is no net benefit at all to killing seals. It is cruel and economically isn't even sustainable.

And I absolutely understand how you generally feel about causes. I guess I'm more into them generally-speaking, I'm more of that activist hippy type, but indeed many causes can tend to be hyped, and the hype could only tear them apart or discredit them.

But this particular cause is generated purely from moral outrage. Unadulterated moral outrage. Of course I am also a passionate tree hugger and believer in the natural environment, so that could also explain how I believe beyond just the senseless killing that seals really do represent a vital role in our environment and ecosystem, but the bottom line here is, I just believe this sort of massacre is immoral and brutal, period.

Sincerely,
Noah Eaton
