This afternoon two white German sheperd dogs chased my sheep and got hold of a little ram and roughed him up so badly that the vet had to put him down. It wasn't a pretty sight I can tell you that! Lucky for me, a farmer saw it happening and he called the police and the vet. The owners of the dogs had just moved into their new home, close to my sheep. They'd put up a big fence around their garden, but somebody left the gate open (they said) and in no time the dogs were jumping the fence and chasing the sheep. Once a dog has done that, he will continue to do so every chance he gets. A rather frightening thought, because that's the dyke my ewes and lambs will be on, coming Spring. Tomorrow I'll hear what the police has to say and then it will be not so pretty for the dog owners too, because they probably will get the choice between locking them dogs up for good or put them down. There's no cure for a dog who has killed sheep once. Damn, now I'll always be frightened what to find when I go down to the sheep to feed them. Like scattered leaves...my words will flow |

T, Sorry to hear about this. Having been the target of a surprise attack by a neighbor's very large dog, I fully appreciate the loss of ease that you are now presented with. Clearly, a police issue. I hope they can take care of this now. (I hate carrying a big stick.) e |

Oh Titia, what a pickle to be in, especially when your livlihood counts on those sheep. I have to agree and I am a dog lover as well, but I had heard this before that one a dog gets a run at sheep they will do it again, and that makes it hard on you and your new neighbours. I hope you can come to an understanding all the way around as you should not have to worry about your own property and possessions like that. I am SO sorry this happened to you, and I am even sadder about the little gaffer who died. I hope you and your family to share a wonderful Christmas, and big knuffles to all of ewe! LOL |

I'm so sorry, Titia - This is a sad situation for everyone... for you, your neighbors, your lost ram, and even for those misbehaving dogs - There are no winners here... I hope all is resolved as best as can be hoped... Hugs from me to you...  |

Well, the dogs are not going to be killed, but fenced in for good, with a big lock on the door. They are nice people who are as sad as I am. They are still considering what to do with the dogs. It's hard, I love dogs too, but you can't have dogs running about who kill sheep. I'm not the only one who has sheep around here. We'll see what happens, but those dogs can never and never walk free again and that's sad too. I'm a bit down, because I keep seeing in my mind that lovely beast running for his life and get thrown forth and back between these killerdogs, biting and tearing. He must have been in so much pain. I need to cut that image loose for my own good, but it's hard. In nature you know preditors kill to eat and that's normal, but these sheep stand no chance at all when a dog is coming after them.
