Arrrrrrgh!! This makes me soooooo upset!! I am blocked once again. I have words and phrases popping into my head as quick as a lightening strike....and just as quickly they are GONE. By the time I pick up a pen and paper......POOF....bye bye. What can I do? I want to be able to write a poem so badly.....it's like an itch I can't scratch. Ummm...lol. Do any of you have some tips for getting and keeping ideas? Maybe it is this heat and humidity. Whatever it is, I am biting my nails - which disgusts me....then I get even angrier with myself. How do some of the poets here at Passions do it? I mean.....two or three poems a day!! Maybe I should just take a break and not even think about writing....maybe that's the key! HELP!! thanks everyone, Chris

Well, all I know is that beating your head against a wall does not help, because I have tried that and everything else. I hope you find the answer to your question, because I know how you feel and it is the most horrible curse ever.

ya know... that was me for the last four months. All I know is that once I started writing in my journal again I was able to write poetry... granted that was the same time that I started to hide from my own emotions again... hmmm... I honestly don't know what to tell you other than keep a pen and paper with you at all times, maybe that'll help... *hugs* I feel your pain...

I start writing short little senryu's when blocked, till something bigger breaks loose.I also suggest beating your muse till she is more agreeable

umm... I sat out in the rain last night. That allways helps me. I write down a few words on a peice of paper. The last poem I wrote, I thought of a random phrase and came up with the "slash and burn technique" Then I tried writing stuff down, but ended up crossing it all out but the color grey. Oh, and there's my poem I allways write poems with a theme, and this one was fire. My last one was ice. That allways helps me. try it, it really works

Thanks poet people....you have given me some good tips. Do you ever feel like....I know it sounds silly...but like your brain is about to explode? lol. Thinking too much I guess. I see so much around me each day to write about....but when I try...NOTHING. Oh well...I shall go outside into the blazing sun and run thru the sprinkler...that'll surely bring some relief!! lol. Wish I could sit one on one with you all and chat. Everyone is so unique!! hugs!!

Chris...words have to flow like water...relax and it will happen for you...and you can't compare yourself to other poets...you're unique...you have to do what is natural for you..

believe in what your heart feels...

(chuckling)...

quit trying...

you create the block for yourself by also creating the expectation that you should write. Relax and forget about writing it down..just absorb it all without the thoughts of writing it, without the thoughts of capturing every detail and trying to save it.. whena phrase comes to you.. ignore it... if it gnaws at you then you'll know it is begging to be written

Hi Chris ... gosh, I'm sorry this is happening. I wish I could wave a magic wand or sprinkle you with fairy dust and help you out.

If it's any consolation, I am struggling too due to medication that seems to numb my brain, although my doctor says it doesn't! What does he know!!  I've found that writing haiku's and senryu's and dragging some old stuff out of the dusty drawers is about as much as I can handle right now.

Hang in there, I'm sure it will get better. I like Wind's suggestion of sitting in the rain ... it probably wouldn't help me write, but it sure would cool me off.

Hugs sweetie, Marti

Thanks Marti. We must be on the same meds! lol. I think doctors like to put our brains on a sort of holding pattern so that we don't ask them too many questions....lol.
I will be okay. My sister is helping me out - as she always does, and my muse is shyly peeking out from behind the bookcase. You and everyone else here is so nice!

Cpat. Hair...quit chuckling at me!

Sometimes it's because it SEEMS everyone else is exploding with words, and we want to join the crowd.

But honey...you stand out when that singular idea comes to you.  I'm not chuckling, but Cpat has the right idea...

when the right idea keeps niggling at you...
that's the one to put in your hand.  Your hand will know what to do at that point.

maybe you can:
go and watch the worst movie they ever made and I am sure you will say, hey I can write better than that and that's it... sometimes it is just a small confidence thing, probably...

perhaps, sometimes lots of reading helps ... because some thoughts touch you more than the rest and prod you on to explore them etc. etc...

dunno if this helps

What Cpat said... with one addition. *S* Keep the pen and paper handy... that gnawing can get mighty uncomfortable and it's tough to read poems you try to scratch onto your own dry skin. LOL

Aww, you poets are wonderful !! Thanks for the input and gentle nudges. My hubby and I are going away this Saturday up to God's Country we call it. All along Georgian Bay...the calm and the scenery centers me...so maybe this will help. I feel the "stirring" so either I have indigestion...or my muse is waking up!! Hugs for all of your help.

only listen to half of what Jason said LOL
yep, experiment with senryus
they help you focus on the essence of your thoughts, and don't force you to drag a lot of grammar rules around

your muse is just resting

Nightshade~~~Chris Just be patient. I have been going thru the same thing for the last 3-4 months and just this week I was able to complete 2 poems that was started about 3 months ago. Slowly my muse is coming back.
When I first started writing, I wrote my very first poem in about 10 minutes, then it was 2 years before I wrote another one.I thought I would never write another one. One week I wrote 5 poems, so just don't try to force it.Maybe you could carry around a mini cassette recorder and when thoughts come to you just push the record button. I sure hope everything works out for you.

Thanks everyone. My sister Enchantress has helped me by having me write a duet with her. It was fun. Seems I can write when under pressure(not that she was pressuring me), but...when it "has" to be done...I seem to be able to write! My hope is to one day write on a whim.
Paul, you are correct in saying that you cannot force it and sometimes ideas are just popping up everywhere and then there will be a dry spell for heaven only knows how long. I guess I just worry to much. lol
You have all been great! I am off on a holiday with my hubby for the next few days. Maybe I will be inspired!! hugs all round. Chris
