(not making fun Alex---just me being goofy again) but I DO have a legitimate complaint! Hmmm...Why?

*hands on hips defiantly*

WHY? If y'wanna drive a car? they give you a learner's permit...but if you want to MARRY? THEY GIVE YOU A LISCENSE?)

don't YOU think, there should be a learner's permit for relationships? (OH...after 25 years, I think he may have studied for the test....sigh)

FRIGGING SIGH.

There’s a lot to be said for staying a pedestrian and getting rides off your friends when you need them.

(I should mention the fact that this is only my opinion, I hold no formal qualifications apart from being happily married for two years (though actually married for sixteen   ) and I recommend any advice I give be completely ignored and treated as irrelevant on the above grounds.)

I dunno ... People need to learn how to make a relationship work ... Instead of depending on one person, but it takes two people to make a relationship work ... but sometimes one just does all the work.
If that made any sense at all ..

Learner's permit? ROTFL. You might have a great idea there Karen. Instead of prenups about money, real property and such, howz about heart and soul agreements? Alas, they wouldn't be worth any more than the paper, so no matter what it's called, it won't keep you from getting your heart broken.
But the learner's parenting permit sounds like a good idea. 2500 hours of supervised childcare, different age groups, ESPECIALLY with 2-4 yr olds and 13-16 yr olds. Poplualtion Zero could benefit.

No! No! No!

… which government agency would you like to be responsible for deciding if you passed or failed the course? You think the IRS is too powerful? They only control your money. How much more powerful would they be if they held the strings to your heart and future children?

Um, Ron, I heard, the uh, No...maybe what I was saying [not to speak for anyone else but little ol' me] is that NOW there are books for kids and marriage, but I don't remember a whole lot of them being handed out during the bridal shower when I was a, uh, bride...

not that there weren't any, but what's an 18 year old looking for, anyway?  Not to say that there weren't then, and aren't now, some very intelligent, sophisticated 18 year olds....

but what I WAS and AM trying to say NOW, is that I sure am trying to dish out some "hey, been there, done that, are you SURE you want to go that route" directions now and ... guess what?  Kids still don't want to do anything but follow their own idea of "what can you tell me, I can make it work! philosophy...

No, I don't need the tax-paid people to tell me how to make it as bad as what they're living with now...and by their own hand, yet...

perhaps I should get them to move in with the kids, right?

Karilea, I hear you.

While I don't think anyone should decide if we're "worthy" to get married or have kids, I have no problem at all with society deciding WHEN we should get married. Everyone will probably agree that fourteen is too young to marry. Personally, I think eighteen is too young, too. I would probably buy into twenty-one, if only because many who wait that long end up waiting another four or five years.

How's thirty sound to everyone?

The daughter of an acquaintance was pregnant when I arrived in Michigan five years ago, pregnant at the tender age of fourteen. Before she is considered to have enough judgement to legally drink, she'll have a kid attending school. That ain't right.

Oh, and about the books? Being something of a bookworm and something of an extremist, I pretty much devoured everything I could find when my first-born daughter made her appearance into my life. Robin still has nothing but unkind words for Dr. Spock.

ROTFLMAO at your reply, Ron. I had friends who read Dr. Spock diligently as their baby grew up, and now that grownup baby thinks the old Dr. was the original "babyquacker."
I don't see any books or laws that will ever be capable of stopping teenagers or determined adults from experimenting with sex, drugs, alcohol, or anything else they are determined to try. Guess we just have to keep using the basic relationship building blocks, of respect, trust, compassion, love, and lots of time and space.
   And poetry.

Oh dear lord, what have I done now? I have elicited bold enlarged "No's" from this man I respect so much...sigh...

story of my life...

but you do know, Ron, I typed in jest of course, I am of the "less government--better governed" mode---I actually don't give a damn who thinks what of me--I'm in this trip for "personal best".

Forgive me, with understanding? I bought a wedding dress last week? and I've been suffering ever since! (this is a real problem for me...total anxiety)

Funny, I thought if I could get excited about the dress? everything would be alright....

I came back to add---and to ask others actually--here in Louisiana there is what is called a "covenant marriage"---the couple agrees to counsel? and? it is much harder to divorce...is this a law in other states? (and NO, HELL NO...SERENITY DID NOT AGREE TO ONE OF THOSE, AND IF ANYONE SHOULD INFORM THE BF OF THIS LAW---ye shall suffer the wrath of ME!!!)

(serenity exits, looking forward to med insurance, for now? she's grinding her teeth!)

Was that coven or covenant? WOW! You bought a WWWWWedding dress? I looked at one once.
It didn't seem to fit....but you never know, things happen!
Stay calm, take deep breaths, twirl under the stars, and it'll be allright, 'till the mourning comes. Just kidding sis, I am keeping my best fingers crossed for you.
Wow. A dress.

30 sounds great, Ron...as for Dr. Spock...you didn't read him until the baby came, and that was my point.  Neither did a lot of other parents.  Of course, while Spock was in our house for "what to do in case of medical emergency"...otherwise he was used on our backsides when needed...

Can I go back to 30 and try it again?  I'm game...

Serene one, you didn't say [or I just didn't see]...who the wedding dress is for...

You ever wonder why, when someone tries to 'hum' the Wedding March, that it comes out as:

dumb dumb da dumb?

That borders on sacrilege, Sharon! Don't you realize that marriage is a wonderful institution?

So, if you want to live in an institution the rest of your life …

(Why do I feel we're not doing enough here to calm Karen's trepidations?)

Marriage is like the mumps - you only want to have it once. It causes swelling (pregnancy)....

But you know, honestly, for Karen at this time I think marriage is the answer - as long as it isn't the solution....does THAT make sense? NO? Then you don't know the whole story.

Sharon, it's not marriage that causes that swelling. When you finally make it to Michigan, I'll talk to your mom and have her explain it to you, okay?

I make jokes about my marriages, but in all honesty, both were among the happiest times of my life. If the right person came along, I'd do it again and never even hesitate. Three is a charm, right?
