I just received a response to one of my poems featured on the main Passions site, "Void."  It read as follows:

"Dude you didn't write this poem."

Naturally, the fact that I wrote the poem is not in question (I was there) ... but for some reason I find myself thoroughly annoyed.

What I want to know is if anyone ELSE heard from this 'person' regarding their own work, or if I was singled out for some bizarre reason ...

Er, WHAT exactly instigated this person to give you that kind of response? While I understood your plight -- I would be fairly annoyed myself -- I must admit that I find their disbelief amusing. I mean, what conviction! "Dude, you didn't write this poem." Mmm hmm. Their irrefutable proof and line of logic astound me! Perhaps this person was so in awe by you that they just couldn't imagine talent of such proportions residing in a meager *snort* poetry forum? Don't worry Mr. Anderson, we know better.

Still enoying your job, btw? The commute must be heaven by comparison…

A few weeks ago, Ron received an email from a 'lady' who said some of her poems were being plagarized!!! One of them was a poem Ron wrote!! Imagine that!

I would ignore it Michael....and get your work copyrighted!!!

After being addressed as "dude" the rest would have been meaningless, as it obviously is!!!!!

i wrote a cute little poem for my friend once.  i posted it and copywrited it.  then a few months down the road i sent it to a friend and she said that she seen it as an e-mail forward.  so i sent her the page that i wrote it on and she was like wow i guess you did write it.  *sighs*  i hate when people do that.  i know how you feel my friend.

All I feel is hurt and sorrow, praying it'll all be gone by tomorrow but as tomorrow rolls around, another tear hits the ground.

I haven't received anything like this. But I have to agree with the idea that maybe this critic was just in awe, and couldn't come to believe you wrote it.  Yes, it's annoying, but you could also take it as a great compliment.

I can understand why you would be so annoyed, it's insulting when a person who has no class or brains to appreciate a truly gifted poet like yourself.  Michael, you're a fine poet and should just disregard what that person has said, that person is obviously just jealous of your talent or is just someone who is fooling around and picked on you for no apparent reason.  The fatc that he/she wrote "dude" shows that he/she has no proof of anything

Take care!

well, it could have been a compliment, y'know? it's all in how you read the text.... "dude (that's a friendly gesture, dude!)", "you didn't write this poem!" (translation? sounds too professional for the web!)

*sigh*....well just maybe??... that's my take on it... but if it wasn't meant that way, it shouldn't bother you .... obviously you know you wrote it...

why not look at the comment in a positive way, though? might as well... life is short... not worth worrying about, dude! *smooch*

hehe *wink*

Michael, this might be where that idea surfaced...

Thanks Ron,

I knew there was something fishy about this one - call it instinct I guess.  Well, now that the culprit is identified, is there actually anything one can do about an underage copyright infringer and plagiarist, other than just contacting the sponsor of the page she posted it on and having it removed???

Sigh ... it looks like it's in a few more places too Michael. I've been fighting with some of this myself over the last while. It's really aggravating ...

No problem Michael.  When I saw this thread I did another search on my own poems and have more to contact myself.  I had a little time this morning, and thought I'd do a few quick spot checks for you.

This one has taken your poem "Need", renamed it and changed the very odd word. He's calling it his own Michael …
http://hometown.aol.com/tunderawolf/dream.html

And another …
http://pub7.ezboard.com/fdaurbancamelotpoetryspokenword.showMessage?topicID=257.topic

If you want to do a pretty comprehensive review, what I've found works best, is to have your author's page from the main site up in one window http://netpoets.com/poems/authors/0004000.htm , and go into one of the poems you want to search.  Have the google search open at the "advanced" search section in a second window http://www.google.com/advanced_search . Choose a rather uncommon line from your poem, and copy and paste into the "exact phrase" portion of google, then search (I don't know if it makes a difference, but I always take the capital off the first word of the line I copied and leave off the punctuation at the end, as some people re-type it themselves and drop those).

I have a template letter in Word that I use and basically fill in the blanks, and e-mail it off to the offender as I go.  I've found people to be pretty good about removing it entirely or properly acknowledging in some cases after I've contacted them. If they've taken full credit as the writer as they did above, I use a pretty strong letter and tell them they have 48 hours to remove it.

I know how frustrating this is … but hope this helps ...

They say imitation is a form of flattery, and in some ways I guess it is a compliment that some one was so taken with a poem that they wanted it to speak for them...
and I guess this is chance we take posting our work all over cyberspace...
BUT, I just went and looked at all these places where M's poems have been posted and it was very disturbing to see his words that have touched and effected me so many times, with someone elses name attached.
I have heard about this many times and remember this coming up before with Kit...
but this was the first time I saw the actual poems claimed. It makes me wonder if I even want my poems that are in wait, to be posted on the main site. But I guess if someone really wants to do this...they can find them in the forums as well.
Anyway...thanks Kit for the info on the search...
And M...if its any consolation...
I share your Grrrrrrr!!
Good luck in your efforts to take back your work.
Thanks also to Ron for all you do to try and protect us against this.

It can be frustrating and even a little shocking initially JM. It's really a matter of doing a search now and again and sending out appropriate letters when needed.  Please don't let it deter you from posting your work at the main site or anywhere else.   In the long run, I've found the positive feedback from the main site far outweighs the negatives of these very aggravating and irritating few.  Be it the internet or hard copy ... if they want to copy it, they will ...

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped in digging up these sites.  I never dreamed this problem could be so "out of hand".  I appreciate everything you've all done here, with any luck I'll soon have my poetry removed from these and all the other sites I've found containing it.
