I have seen the most ridiculous spelling errors, and not made on purpose for a joke. I know not everyone can be a walking dictionary, but these ones are so OBVIOUS! Come on!

Sorry, it just gets to me. Especially when you see them OVER and OVER and OVER again!

Yawp...I saw an editorial in the Houston Chronicle not too long back about that. They showed the cover letter sent in for the position as receptionist. Her reliance on spell-check was very obvious, as one could hardly make out the material for all the proof-reading notations added by the editor.

This is why I keep a large dictionary by my desk at all times. This is not to say that errors will not happen, but for the attentive (a little tired and had to crack open the dictionary for that one) the likelihood will be greatly reduced.

This is a problem for me too! I know we can't all spell like a National Champion, but at least try!

You aren't the only one who it bothers, Elizabeth. Lets put forth a little more time and make sure most of our words are spelled right, okay people?

Elizabeth, I hate to be a stickler... no I don't, I love it! But anyway, I noticed that you spelled a word wrong... the "then" before your first "OVER." Shouldn't that be "them?" Smiles and understanding, 'cause I agree with you completely!

All right, Christopher, I fixed it. Thanks for pointing that out to me. But, there's a difference between a typo and a stupid mistake. Typos I understand, but the errors I was talking about are more like the "donet" one aforementioned, and other ones that are obvious. I could give a few examples from this site, and I won't mention them because I don't want to offend anyone. But they do get to me, just because they're such simple, everyday words.

Alicat, PdV, Alwye, Sunshine, Nan...thanks for replying.

There's a difference between a typo and a stupid mistake? Please!

Spelling errors are, for the most part, attributable to a wide variety of causes - poor education being just one of them. Typo's are attributable to only one thing - lack of care.

I can forgive a spelling error much easier than a typo. A spelling error takes more energy and intelligence to correct or avoid. Typo's merely take a second to proofread your work before posting....

I agree, JP, but I have seen very smart people making incredibly stupid errors. It's very easy to type up a message or a reply and not catch a small typo, like my typing "then" instead of "them". I try to proofread my work and if one slips by me, I edit the message. However, I notice people using wrong vowels and leaving letters out of words. They continue to make these errors two or three times, not seeming to notice what they are doing. It's not poor education, it's just ignorance.

Or, it could be something else. There have been poets who used intentional misspellings as their trademark or individual style. Hell, some nits might even think it's trendy and avant-garde...you never know with some people.

I could say that e e cummings refused to capitalize or punctuate anything due to the fact that his typewriter was missing those keys, but I doubt it.

Alicat, eternally thankful to cummings for providing so much shredded kitty litter.

Oh absolutely... what about the people who spell wrong on purpose?  Who, instead of taking the time to key "to" or "too," type "2?"  I find that this really annoys me...
Just a personal peeve.
However we should take into account that some of these people don't speak English as a first language.  So long as the communication is clear, we should be tolerant.
Still, spelling mistakes are one thing that really bugs me.

Spelling errors don't bug me as much as short-hand typing does.  Spelling errors that are ridiculously wrong, sure, that bugs me a little, but when someone types numbers for words and instead of putting "are" put "r" or "u" for "you."  It's not only hard to read, but makes me not want to continue reading that certain post.
Hrm, I have my pet peeves, we all do, but I think this one is among the more common...

No one is perfect, and the spelling check doesn't always catch errors. IT happens. I know college professers that do it. I do it all the time. Espically when I am stressed out, but thats just my two cents.

I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Temptress.
We ALL make mistakes, as we've just seen earlier.

yes, there is a reason that word programs have a build in spell check, for people like me. Proof reading is crucial.

Proof reading and spell checks don't always solve the problem.  Me for instance.  It is hard for me to see the difference between then and them when I have been writing for a while.  Also we must realize that there are many different dialects of english in the US alone and different ways to spell the same word.  Anyway as long as I can understand what the poet is saying spelling and grammar for that matter don't matter to much to me.  Oh I may have to read something twice but that really isn't anything to complain about.

I hate seeing spelling errors. The common mistake or typo I can easily understand, I make them all the time, but when people have so many spelling errors that it is hard to understand what they are saying, then a line has been crossed.

I really, really hate when people cut words short on the boards and in conversations... Language is a tool and using "2" for "too", "u" for "you" and so forth really dulls your tool and undermines your credibility.

A spell check followed by a grammar check and then a sanity check. All this then should be followed by an intelligent guess...

I guess nothing made any sense so far so I stop guessing...

On the other hand, let's promise to be a touch careful about the spellings, typing errors are understandable, but too many spelling mistakes in any write, seems to suggest that the writer is not so keen on being careful...

whatever...
