How Short Life Really Is

How short life really is
afterall, it goes by so fast
I remember kindergarten
now half a century past

the taste of the pretty crayons
the smell of the white school paste
the glue stuck in my braids
thick and be-ribboned, they trailed to my waist

the teacher taught us to trace
a basket of flower confections
but when I drew my own picture
she said "this little girl didn't follow directions"

how strange it seemed somewhat later
when I heard her tell my mother
that her child was so artistic
she said "don't keep it under cover"

I must be a naughty child, I thought
her rules, I didn't follow
ignoring instructions, I drew my own truth
her hypocrisy still rages hollow

how short life really is
afterall, it goes by so fast
we must paint our own future, design our own lives
and make the good moments last

my hair is no longer be-ribboned and braided
now it is short and with grey, it is shaded
and though its no longer sticky with glue
to my own self, I know I've always been true

how short life really is
afterall, it goes by so fast

Lyra,
Awesome write! And I have a theory about aging. We don't feel old because God did not create us to die. So why I'll body ages and dies our minds never do as they weren't created to think that way. Painfully honest truths here and well expressed besides.

Gee, I know what you mean Lyra.  Inside my head I am only about eight years old..I can still remember the taste of school paste, I think was made with flour and water or something..that's what it tasted like though..lol...yes, it goes by in the blink of an eye, so we must enjoy every single minute.

Thanks so much, Larry...I think you might be right.....
I really don't feel much older than that naughty little girl who drew her own picture instead of tracing the one the teacher passed around...
but when I look in the mirror, I see someone who could be that little girl's grandma.

Maybe I could just say that the white streaks in my hair are really school paste

Thanks so much, Nancy....
Isn't it strange how those memories stay with us....even the tiniest little details like the smell of that paste...
I guess that we are always children at heart, if we are lucky......

I can't believe this  Lyra..I awoke early as usual..for some reason I had a peaceful night..no coughing...(maybe the medicine is finally working)I am here settling down with a vanilla coffee, passions and you. I reached for a little spiral booklet I bought awhile back and realized it had days in it of sayings about Secret Pals and friendships and  I had turned to April 6th which said:

"This above all:
to thine own self be true,
And it must follow
as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be
false to any man."
Shakespeare...

How "spooky" is that???
Hope you are feeling well.
hugssss

I know that there is a discipline for drawing within the lines, and following direction, so that from a Kindergartener's beginning, society doesn't become chaotic, but...but...what would we do without those wonderful people who think OUTSIDE of the box....

and you brought back the smell of glue Very Well....I recall how I made "fingerprint" thins...allow Elmer to dry on my finger, then very, very carefully pulling it back to see my very own, individual fingerprint, the only one in the world just like this...

this little poem is not only chocked full of wisdom, but magic, too...

Lyra my dearest friend, what a delight to have read your writing, I cannot imagine life without you painting a rainbow into my sky. This is full to the brim of wonder, and of course it’s good YOU wrote it.

Utterly utterly perfect writing. I didn’t eat the crayons, I was a good girl, Don’t you just hate the goody two shoes who’s always in the class Actually if you asked my teachers do they remember me they’d probably shudder and say Oh yes we remember her! I was the one always talking, of course

Madame - you write with such excellence. No one writes with your style. And life does go by too fast, if only it could always be happy instead of the trials and tribulations that go with it. But I guess that's what makes it interesting...

Lyra,
Enjoyed your beautiful write. There is no dodging the wizzard of time. But laughing keeps him at a distance.

Lyra how very true your words are. Isnt it funny how smells of crayons and glue bring back memories, and hey, I am glad you were one to not stay in the lines but went your own creative way. WONDERFUL, and I loved reading this poem. floria

Thanks so much, Karilea....
I think somehow, that most creative people, whether they be poets, novelists, artists, or even teachers...tend to think outside the box and draw their own truths...

Thanks Marsha,  Somehow I can't picture you as being the"goody two shoes" of the class...
but the talking too much does sound like you......incidentally I always got into trouble for that also......I guess I got into trouble for lots of things...
