There’s a loveliness in reaching up amidst blushing colors,
sweet scented sheets whipping strongly southwest,
pinning together cloth flower bouquets;
planting instant blowing gardens
in exhilarated spring gales.

I still love the feel of my long hair blowing tangle-wild
on bright warm windy mountain afternoons,
lugging cumbersome baskets to
fasten freshly washed clothes
on the seventy-one foot line
strung pine to pine behind the house;

squinting up, dodging the brilliant sun,
straw hat’s drawstring tugging at my neck,
cool dampness flapping in my flushed face.

There’s an élan in heavy winter quilts jerking out of my hands,
flying straight out, too high to touch, as though
yearning to reach the streaming clouds.

And a reminiscence in meeting that happy child again,
forty years back, me, hanging clothes with my mother;
a sunny memory fastening us both
together forever.

The spiritual wind that holds survivors aloft, plants the seeds from which bloom new hope ... R.J.G.

What a wonderful, brilliant piece of work. And the pictures and memories it conjured up in my head left me feeling the wind blow through my hair.

"lugging cumbersome baskets to
fasten freshly washed clothes
on the seventy-one foot line
strung pine to pine behind the house;"

How I remember doing this with my Grammy at her summer home near the ocean so many, many years ago. She had a washboard and would let me help scrub the sheets and then hang them on the line. I can still remember that wonderful smell as I crawled into bed at night on sheets so stiff they could rip your skin off, but smelling of ocean's mist, pine and fresh air.

Bravo to you and thank you for a memory buried and brought forth again. Hugs, Marti

Ooops, my apologies to you Rosemary and to Marge. Marge sent me a copy of your poem and suggested I read it and when I replied to you, it showed up with her name. How do I fix that anyway? Gosh, this is so confusing....Marti

Well Honey,

   Not exactly my cup of tea, but I sure loved the part about mother. She sure means
so much to me.

I'm so glad Marge sent me the link for this... I would have hated to miss this beauty! *S*

Some of my earliest memories are playing in the yard under the clotheslines... using the freshly washed clothes for shade... and hiding places. *S* Later on, I felt so grown up when I got to hang out the towels... but yup... they dried rough! LOL

Wonderful write, Rosemary... thanks for the trip down memory lane. *S*

Rosemary

You touched a memory with me...with your close line, of my mother and the back yard..and the sheets fresh from the sun to sleep in that night.  Thank you for such a lovely picture!

Rosemary, you make wash day sound like it is a joy to do. How wonderful this was, I also remember my mother when i do certain chores. But washday seems so special, especially the smell of the fresh laundry after it has hung out all day. Wow you did a fantastic job on this one, I love it, your hair blowing in the wind. Oh I just love it. Bravo. floria
