One cool morning in September
I was really, if I remember,
Doing nothing more than passing time in bed
And I felt that it would be a
Kind of different idea
To go downtown and have my fortune read.

It's not that I believed in
All the mumbo-jumbo weaved in
The ability to read a crystal ball
But curiosity implored me
And besides, Septembers bored me
So I went to have it done once and for all

I was led into a cellar
By some tiny little feller
Announcing Madame Zodiac would appear.
I surpressed a tiny giggle
As she entered with a wiggle
And a waddle in an outfit rather queer.

I bit hard down on a knuckle
To defeat a little chuckle
As she grandly sat and stared into the ball.
I tried hard supressing laughter
But the words she spoke thereafter
Left me weak with the absurdness of it all.

I paraded around the room
As she spoke her words of doom
Trying hard to see the seriousness of it all
But her words were so foreboding
I felt circuits overloading
And I fell in a laughing fit against the wall.

I threw a ten-spot down as payment
For such hearty entertainment
As I bid my host a fare-the-well goodbye
And the last thing I remember --
As I stepped into September
Was her staring up with sadness in her eye.

Only a month or two had passed
When I found myself aghast
And so perplexed by all I knew not what to do
For every word that witch had told me
Seemed to follow and enfold me
And, one by one, they magically came true!

Back with fevered haste I sped to
That damp cellar filled with voodoo
For I knew I couldn't rest until I knew
How that sickly, pallid, wrinkled
Dirty, grungy, rancid, crinkled
Slimy, hocus-pocus fortune teller knew!

"There's no secret here", she told me
As I felt raw fear enfold me.
"I knew you'ld finally come around at last.
My crystal ball of special glass
Won't show events that come to pass,
All it really does is show the past!"

And reality came to me
As I felt her words go through me
And the sense of it came slowly into mind
For, if you want to look ahead,
Don't look forward but, instead,
All you have to do is look behind!

Those mistakes you made back then
You are going to make again
Even though you think you're smarter than before
And, if your past is filled with sinning
From the moment of beginning,
Then your future is assured forevermore.

BRAVO!!! Wow, this is wonderful, sweet friend, I too both agree and disagree with the morale of what she said, I feel it is important to look behind and to correct the mistakes we made, but we mustn't get absorbed in it either, we rather must wear our past like a coat of armor but embrace the future and look to what's ahead to find hope, and ultimately, find peace in the present and embrace each moment with joy so more time passes abruptly! (big huggsssssss) These are very powerful thoughts, sweet friend, we all love you so much, I LOVE IT!!! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Balladeer, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Another great one, Michael...but alas....I don't tell fortunes....but if you think I am a cookie...maybe I am a fortune cookie and I have your fortune inside of me...
but you would first have to break me open to find it......and, I'm afraid I would find that to be very painful...and besides, I don't break that easily

However, I am a witch......or so they tell me!

Anyway...I loved your poem!

Great write my friend
I've never been to a fortune teller, and I don't know If I ever will!
Actually, I might go see one but I'd NEVER ever call Cleo, she's phony bologna

Another witty wander just perfect for April Fools. And as any of us, I loved it!
Your style is somewhere between the classic limerick and a baudy night out on the town.
All good wishes to you. ThisDiamond

I was more than a bit amused by this adorable story.  It brought an immediate smile to my face ... My mother is a "psychic" and I find myself chuckling to myself sometimes over her overt predictions... until they come to pass.... at which time she swoops in with a matriarchal "I told you so" . Great write!!! I gotta get my mom to read this one now.

’Deer dearest heart what an absolutely wonderful poem this is, and how true in its essential details. The question is do we have free will? Or is all we do pre-destined? So our actions whatever they may be, don’t matter at all. Hard to say really, sometimes when my mind is befuddled by what I take to be a spooky coincidence I say no, what we do doesn’t matter at all, the end result will be the same. And then other times I believe in free will.

Well, whatever the reality is, and since I’m neither omniscient nor even remarkable clear headed, I won’t know the answer. What IS clear is that YOU have always have had and will continue to have a superior and quite amazing gift to write brilliantly.

As I’ve mentioned before it’s this power you have to involve the reader in the story, so they care about the characters, that makes you such a fabulous writer.  Wonderful utterly utterly wonderful writing. I’m so glad I waited to write a comment here that made sense. Truly dear ‘Deer this is absolutely excellent writing and I thank you most sincerely for posting it again.

NO ONE does it like YOU

’Deer hi there, firstly I absolutely love this poem, this is another one that I hadn’t got around to reading. So thank you very much for posting it.

You know this demonstrates what a really good writer you’ve always been, as mum has said it hooks into the sub-conscious and carries the reader into the heart of the story. Not only do you care for the character, you care about the outcome. What amazes me is the ability to mix comedy with a very real and important message, this is the sign of really good writer, and quality writing

I suppose this is why you are an excellent poet to read, it is, as they say in the blurb, an absorbing and holistic poem, a total experience. Beautiful writing, a wonderful story with much truth, this is a splendid poem from the pen of the master.

I wonder if I will make the same mistakes again? (Or as mum says isn’t it the mistakes that make us human? Yes I think the answer to both is probably)

Deer, Well I'm a calvinist at heart so I would have to agree with you, although poetically I feel I should disagree.
Great style with the words anyway that's one history that's worth repeating.

If we don't learn from our mistakes, we're doomed to repeat them... and being blonde, I can't even learn to put my car keys where I'll find them. *G*

But at least I've learned where to find superb poetry... I've only to click on your name. *S* Excellent work... enjoyed the revisit. *S*
