A Sometimes Surprise

I was awakened last evening,
at first I wasn't too sure
if I was dreaming or not,
since dreams have passed me by lately.
I even pinched myself to make sure...
and in this morning's light
I see the slight bruising it left on my arm.

I am getting so use to not expecting,
that its power really does appeal to me.
It's like those breaths that catch me now,
the calm gets broken, but when it settles down again
I am pleased rather than disheartened.

I am learning the process of acceptance,
of who I am, of who you are,
of what is happening to me. I am beginning
to like this willingness in me,
that doesn't live in terms
and conditions that use to bind me to others.
I can exchange pleasantries now,
with the worst of them,
share loving words
with those who care, and can suffer
rejection and intolerance in quietude.

I have had some of the best teachers in life,
but only recently...I wonder where they were before,
when I was so idealistic, and believed
only in the good in all.
Yes I surprise myself often now...
but enjoy the surprise from others, even more.

Thankyou,
M

nakdthoughts,
I am so glad you are surprising yourself. You deserve to be surprised...pleasantly so.

Surprises are the flip side of expectations,
It's true, good things do happen to good people.

Isn't it nice when life surprises you......
pleasantly!
This is a beautiful poem, Maureen...
I especially loved

I have had some of the best teachers in life,
but only recently...I wonder where they were before,
when I was so idealistic, and believed
only in the good in all.
Yes I surprise myself often now...
but enjoy the surprise from others, even more.
