big old Bangor Maine up by the shack

Two a.m. and my eyes waver between open
and shut, as it seems my twisted sheets have
conspired to remodel my bed into enemy
territory where sleep scampers about trying
to avood the crosshairs of the sniper insomnia

It is at these times that my mind billows forth
all it contains, like a child at a slumber party
who vehemently refuses to sleep, mumbling
softly to the other children who all conspire to
remain awake against the wishes of tired parents

I roll slowly from my bed, wincing as my bare
feet touch the cold surface of rough-hewn pine
floors, standing and streching I shake off the
age that creeps into my bones during the night
as I shuffle step lightly toward the window

The old bullseyed glass windowpanes stand
thickly laden with crystalline patterned frost
that I brush away with the tattered sleeve of my
bathrobe, and peer querulously out into my yard
observing the face of a long dark night

The chalk white moon rests it's weary head over the
rambling uneven pines, casting a ghostlike light
over my glittering snowscaped lawn which no longer
shows my neglect and inept ability of pushing the
mower under a burning late august sun

Headlights from late night travelers pass slowly
in the distance, occasionally passing between
the snow caked trunks of the pine trees that
mark the line between my tiny country home, and
the pressing worries of the world beyond

As I think again in silence, with furrowed brows
I hear movement as my new puppy Charlie stretches
and wanders towards me with a soft click clack
of his claws on the pine floor, looking ponderously
at me, wondering if he too should be awake

I reach down and pat his head, leaning close
enough to smell his milky breath, as I smile
and ask him if he would like to go out, getting
the response of several wet licks as he wags
his whole body while running downstairs

I walk down the stairs with each step seeming to
lighten my worries, Charlie wines while I open
the door and we both race outside, ignoring the
cold of the night, while he runs about fetching
a stick pulled from a hiding place in the snow

Again in my room, I settle Charlie down at my feet
listening as he curls up and quickly falls to sleep
while I also grow peacefully tired, relieved
of all my great worries and stress as I listen
to his breath pass, in a slow soft lullaby

The still of the night is a eerie place to be but somehow the the light of the moon, the headlights and the steady rhythm of your pup breathing created the perfect lullabye!
I hope you fall asleep and dream a little dream,  as your words brought much peace to this weary soul of mine.
