Passover

The firstborn in each family was to die that very night
but the chosen people were told
paint their doorposts with lambs blood
to spare their firstborn's life

The Hebrew people were slaves
so many centuries past
used by the Egyptians
to build their pyramids fast

they hauled the stones for building
and mixed straw with mud and water
to hold the stones together
this ancient form of mortar

the Egyptians were caught in the plagues
they numbered ten in all
but the Israelites escaped
when they followed the holy call

so swift was their departure
no time for their bread to rise
thus was invented Matzoh
unleavened bread instead of demise

and thus tonight at the Seder
we eat our matzohs and pray
the youngest child asks four questions
about this holy day

there are bitter herbs at the table
to remember the bitter times
the shank of the lamb we sacrificed
and mortar of apples, nuts and wine

today we celebrate Passover
in remembrance of the escape
of the chosen ones, from bondage
and the slavery of hate

(big hugggsssssss) God Bless You, sweet friend, I cry every year when I hear about the Passover, but not only because of the angusish everyone had to endure before they escaped but also the freedom they achieve and how they no longer had to endure such hate! (kiss on cheek) God Bless You, sweet friend, this is a wonderful story explaining the true meaning of Passover, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Lyra, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Lyra, you are in my thoughts today, as is Netanya, where I spent many happy moments.

Noah, thanks for your reply...
Passover is a sad holiday but it is also a triumphant and happy one.
I always loved the Passover seder celebration, but this year we aren't having one because of my treatments...

Michael, thanks for your Passover good wishes...but this year, instead of the seder, I got the poison, so I won't be able to enjoy the chicken soup and the matzoh balls.......maybe next year!
I appreciate your good wishes, though.
And I hope you have a great Easter.

Lori...thanks so much and I hope you have an enjoyable Easter with your family.
I am not participating in the seder this year because I don't think I can eat chicken soup and matzoh balls or roasted lamb after the treatments I had today.

Lyra, I can't begin to tell you how my heart goes out to the people of Israel today in sympathy at the latest suicide bombing at the beginning of Passover.  Thank you for this wonderful lesson in poetry and perhaps if we can learn to celebrate our differences as one people, of one earth, we will all live to see happier days.  Shalom and,

Sharon...thanks for your beautiful greeting and for filling me in on the news...
I have been so busy that I have not read a newspaper or watched TV for the past couple of weeks....although I have found the time to post my poems here and to reply to everyone else's....just shows where MY priorities are these days!
Now I know what Kacy was talking about when she mentioned Netanya....boy do I ever feel dumb!

Thanks Karilea...I agree, sharing of cultures is so very important....
When I first moved to Michigan in 1974, I walked into a supermarket and asked where the Matzoh was, and the clerk said "mozzerella!  thats with the cheese"
Now every supermarket in town has an entire aisle dedicated to Jewish foods....
Times sure have changed !

Thanks Suthern...
We may not be totally free of bondage, but I do think that in spite of all of the injustice in the world today...and there is still much too much.....we have come a very long way......
Happy Easter ~hugs~

Madame-Style Chipmunk: *smiles*
Happy Holiday to a fine woman; and may your faith continue
to grow, prosper, and be spread generously like fine wine to others in need
of drink.

A haunting portrayl of enslavement and intrepid brave people.
It's no wonder that the holiday is shared among Jews and Christians
alike, and honors the faith and bravery that such loyal belief in One
may hold.
