Twenty One

Twenty one...the age of perfection
the choice is all yours
pick any direction
you're old enough
to know your own mind
yet young enough
to enjoy all you find

the futures' wide open
the worlds' in your hands
with time on your side
amongst life's shifting sands
may the years treat you kindly
and show you much love
may each morning begin
with the song of the dove

view the world through the eyes of kindness
ignore those whispers of doubt
spread your wings and fly over the clouds
to the place where the rainbows come out
slide down a moonbeam in glittering skies
let the light from above
reflect in your eyes

reach for the stars
and cherish each one
let peace fill your life
and you'll always be young

O Lyra, this is so beautiful, and such wonderful advice, too. What a wonderful occassion. She sure is lucky to have a mom like you.

How wonderful! No one remembered my 21st birthday [which I thought was totally absurd!] so I can imagine how thrilled your step-daughter will be to have this treasure!

Newell...thanks for your reply.  I am not her mother; she has one of those...but I am her stepmother and hopefully, she doesn't see me as her "wicked stepmother"...but then again, she isn't Cindarella either.

Noah...She is a sweet girl and so I wrote her a sweet poem.  I'll tell her that you wish her a happy birthday. Thanks for your reply

Karilea...How could your family forget your 21st birthday!!!!!! especially your 21st!
Are you still angry at them for that?
I know that one year, my mother forgot my birthday...but at least it wasn't my 21st.
thanks for replying to my poem.

Barry...thanks for your reply.  I write about my family a lot because they are the most important people in my life.

Marsha...You are such a sweetheart.  I love your exhuberant replies...they make me feel so very special.

Thanks Lori...I remember that little childhood jingle about the sticks and stones....but I think words CAN harm a person.  They may not break bones, but the wrong words used at the wrong time can do irrepairable harm and of course, likewise...the right words used at the right time can brighten someone's day...and I hope this poem brightens hers.    hugggssss!

Consider you a wicked stepmother? I think NOT!!! I have little doubt she considers herself very lucky to have you....

Yes, words can hurt...so can lack of words, like forgetting a 21st birthday!! You have taken care of that now, haven't you?

mOrNiNg mUNKster:  I am barely awake.....groan....but wanted to take the time
to say Happy Birthday to your 21 daughter.  Happ Happ Happy Birthday!!!!!

This was not just a normal birthday poem:  exceptionally written with some
really good advice for her to start off her adult life.  Sounds like the door will always
be open to her from you and your husband's heart for her if she needs it.

You have a great day, and its wonderful to see you posting again,  Lyra!

Well I for one think that this deserves at least 21 responses, so perhaps by the time she gets this, there will be that many, and more...

I especially enjoyed the last stanza:

reach for the stars
and cherish each one
let peace fill your life
and you'll always be young

Such wonderful advice to give on a special day! Beautiful poem Lyra!

Lyra, to answer your question, the answer is "no way!"  You see, I grew up, and found out what "busy" meant...I also found out that at age 21...everyone thought I was already 28!!!!!!

[Glad to note, and share this with your daughter...if she's really lucky, she will look older sooner, and younger older...]

Saunni...thanks so much for your reply and your wishes

Michael...I think it might be interesting to be wicked, but it goes against my nature, so I'll never have the answer to that...My stepdaughter and I get along quite well.
Thanks for your reply

Jeff...who is this Munkster you mention?
Would that happen to be a certain chipmunk?
thanks for the new nickname...and also for your reply

Martin...thanks for pointing out my missing R.  I just fixed it....and also thanks for the reply

Maureen...thanks so much for the hugs...I need all of those that I can get.

Soliel....thanks so much for your reply I think that I now have 21 responses.

Dulcinea...thats my favorite part of the poem also....thanks for replying.

Karilea...I guess that at 21, I wanted to look 28 also, but unfortunately...I looked 16.  And I continued to look 16 until I was 36, until somehow...magically, I started to grow into my age.  I think it had something to do with raising 2 boys.   many huggggssssss!
