A Very Special Passions Anniversary - Time to Thank Our Lucky Stars

It was a day … a special day, among these pages blue,
One year ago precisely, something started … something "new"!
March 17th, two thousand one, we asked for volunteers,
To help to moderate our "home" … to open new frontiers.

We opened up our forums for our members to enlist,
Behind-the-scenes at Passions, but we had a little twist …
The premise was a simple one, yet never had been done,
It's tough to make a task like "moderation" sound like fun!

But fun it is … and ask we did … and many people joined,
We even had a vote (that's how the "Mod Squad" name was coined),
We've deputized some 50 Passion's members to this date,
One hundred new rotations have been launched through Passion's gate.

How can you spot a Deputy? Just look below their name …
They proudly wear a badge - a star for each rotation claimed;
Each had their 2 week turn (or two, or three, or ten) … it's true!
Each played a part in keeping Passions "safe" for me and you.

Now "safe" may seem a simple word, it's context rather odd,
But here at PiP, that term can be construed as broad.
What makes us come back daily … post and feel like family?
The poetry, camaraderie, the special company!

There's also many things that keep us coming back for more,
And that is thanks to members who have graced the DM's door.
Ron's rules are simple, and are few, but as we like to say …
It's "his" home we have entered, and it's by his rules, we play;

Behind-the-scenes, we all join in discussions and debates,
Each voices their opinion, to discuss a problem's fate.
It's just a part of PiP, that happens every day,
But it's the "key" that keeps our home, a safe and pleasant way.

So here today, please join me … thank our Passion's Deputies,
For all their help in dealing with "behind-the-scenes" crises!
It's teamwork in the largest sense, a group I've come to love,
I cannot think of "anything" … that I am prouder of!

/Kit McCallum

In the past year, we've discussed over 1,200 issues in the Deputy Mod Squad forum, and amassed over 13,000 lively responses to these discussions. Now THAT is definitely something to be proud of!

I'd like to thank each and every Deputy I've had the pleasure of getting to know through this program. Even when their rotations are over, most continue to pop in to the DM forum to lend their thoughts and opinions.  Their names are in alphabetical order, and are followed by the number of 2-weeks rotations these incredible members have assisted in with:

Look at all those names!  And what a successful operation!  It would be wonderful if each and every Deputy Moderator would come to this thread, and give a brief comment as to what being a DM has meant to them!  I hope they join this, soon!

And just think...this program is open to EVERYONE!

Wow! What a wonderful sky of angels. Thank you each and every one, very, very much!

From the bottom, I adore you all. And as I fly so free, often with thoughts different from many others, here, never meaning to harm or ever make anyone sad, I know how important it is to have open minded fair moderators! You each make Passions such a wonderful big family with so much love. Your task is difficult. And you do it well!

Forgive me when I become an issue. I'll try to be more careful as I fly, ever free.

And I want each of you to know, I repeat, I LOVE YOU! You are God's special angels of The Poetry Word, God's Gift to us all.

Kit darling girl this is wonderful, I’m sure it is a wonderful scheme, I don’t know if I could do it though. I lack several necessary skills, writing being just one of them.

But it’s obvious to even the meanest intelligent that you have all the necessary skills, and at the top of them is the fact you are a superb writer. I love this well done all of you DM the name of the greatest superhero in the world, Danger Mouse, it’s an English joke sorry I couldn't resist fabulous writing

This is a wonderful tribute, Kit. I would like to add my thank you to all the DM's. You are an integral part of PiP and we are grateful every day for you diligence, concern, committment and fairness. You do not have to be a writer to be a Deputy. All you need is a desire to make a difference here.

Thank you Deputy Mods, past, present and future

Kit,

I am sitting here with tears in my eyes having read this and thinking of all the wonderful experiences I've had at Pip and as a member of the Mod Squad. I know I don't post poetry very often and don't get in here to read as often as I'd like, but the friendships I've gained from Pip will always have a very special place in my heart. Even though my life is very busy, I'm sure you'll see me back on rotation very soon again. I'm feeling withdrawal.

Kit,

I've very much enjoyed my two rotations as deputy moderator and eagerly await the one coming up next month.  I've learned a great deal and continue to learn.  Each of you, both senior and deputy mods, excite me with your enthusiam and devotion to keeping this place the home I've always known and loved.  I dearly thank you all.

I encourage every member to try a rotation as deputy moderator.  It will give you a lot of insight into the workings and decision making that keeps Passions in Poetry the great success that it has become.  Trust me, you'll walk away feeling very proud of yourself and loving this place all the more.   I recently talked two of my friends into giving it a try and as their first rotation nears, the excitement they are feeling is contagious and excites me also.

It was an honor to be a DM twice! I learned a lot about what makes this special place a warm, loving home. I love you all very much
Thank you everyone for all the support, inspiration and encouragement.

My thanks to the DM's and moderators... and especially Ron... I'm sure I'd get more chores done if PIP were a different place... but I'm so glad for this home you provide. I've visited other sites... came here from one... PIP is without equal. (and chores will wait *G*)

This is a wonderful poem, Kit...

Kit, first I want to thank you for this wonderful post!  I for one know all the hard work and effort you personally put into the Deputy Moderator program.  I have signed up for my second rotation which will be coming up in April.  Also, I would encourage all of Passions members to sign up and not miss the opportunity to experience what goes on behind the scenes.  The enthusiasm and family atmosphere truly gives you a sense of belonging, and it's FUN!

Plus, more importantly, you will be giving something back to Passions...and I'll tell you, it sure makes you feel good!!

I'd like to see everyone who hasn't taken a turn as Deputy Moderator sign up and be a member of the best team on the net!

Again, thanks to Ron, Kit, and every one of the Senior Mods and Deputy Mods, for giving us each the opportunity to become an important part of the Passions family.

~Smiles and Hugs, Nancy~

I think this calls for a group hug, and hey Ron, you get in there too, because if it weren't for you, there would be no "home" to moderate.  It is great to be part of this place!

Thank you Kit for this dedication and take a big bow yourself girl, you earned it!

Wow, a year already? It was a pleasure to help participate in the making of the DM program. It was fun, fun, fun. We worked out the kinks, had a blast while doing it, and then launched the program into success.
Well done Kit, and Ron and everybody else, and especially all the Dm's!!!!

It was my pleasure to be one of the deputies on Passions. I hope that many will follow the deputy link, because it is not only nice to do but it gives you also a view about the moderators job. I for one, have a deep respect for all the Pip Moderators, because of you we have a wonderful home. Thank you for creating the possibillity for us members so we could participate as deputies in PipTalk.

And looking at the date 17 March, it is also a very special day to me.
Me and my hubby are 30 years married then
So that makes a double aniversary right.

What a great way to remind us of those who volunteer their time to make this such an enjoyable place to visit. It’s something I would like to try myself, after my move, and when my life settles down. For now, I’d just like to say a big thank you to all of you for making this place what it is.

Many of you may not realize that the "D" in DM could more appropriately stand for Desperation - because that's what many of us were feeling when this program was initially being born. A year ago, we were within a hair's breadth of closing down the Teen forum, and I suspect we weren't really very far from closing down all the forums. Things were that rough.

Maintaining the high standards we've grown to appreciate here has never been an easy job. As our traffic grew beyond anything we could have imagined a few years earlier, and as the number of poems and posts grew even more quickly, that difficult job was becoming nearly impossible. Many of our Senior Moderators were approaching burn-out. Tempers were understandably short, and patience was unbelievably thin. I think I banned more people in February, 2001, than in all the twenty months prior to that. Many, I think, deserved it, but I'm also sure a few were kicked out of our home because of simple frustration. We were, almost quite literally, drowning in a sea of problems.

Kit McCallum, and the team she assembled, became our life preserver in that turbulent sea.

Kit, at that time, was a Moderator in the Teen forum and, like so many of us here, was frustrated and discouraged. Like everyone else, our Moderators come to these forums to have fun, and few of us were having much fun a year ago. Kit was ready to pack it in and call it quits because she, like most of us, could see no respite from all the problems. We were simply too few to make a real difference.

Obviously, Kit didn't quit. Instead, she became an Admin and took over the responsibility for finding a solution. And I'm not exaggerating, my friends, when I tell you she attacked that solution with passion and dedication and an attention to detail that, to this day, I both envy and very much appreciate. I wrote a bit of software, Nan and Sharon helped put together training materials, but the brunt of the project fell on Kit's shoulders. And I never doubted for a moment it was in safe and capable hands. She talked to the Teens who comprised our first group of DM's, she told me what she needed in the way of software, and she made it all work flawlessly.

To understand the job that Kit and the DM's really do, I think you first have to understand the purpose of the Program. At first glance, I know it appears the DM's are just another level of help, a much larger set of eyes and hands to help us manage all the potential problems. That's true. And that alone would be a tremendous aid, helping us to alleviate the burn-out for our full-time Senior Moderators. That level of help is important, but it's really only the tip of a much larger iceberg. The DM Program is actually less about help than it is about education. Each of those who participate for their two-week rotation are exposed, some might say even immersed, in the philosophies and principles that make this such a comfortable home for so many. They not only learn to recognize problems, not only learn how to deal with problems, but they also learn WHY we see certain things as problems. I hope they learn, very quickly, that the DM's aren't just police men. They are, rather, Leaders who help set the tone and atmosphere in our home. They don't just solve problems, but by the examples they set, they insure we have fewer problems that need to be solved. In the year since their inception, they have become the backbone that gives us strength.

Without Kit McCallum, I think I can safely say there would be no DM Program. And without our team of Deputy Moderators, I think I can sincerely say these forums would have long since vanished. We all owe her and each of them a very, very large measure of gratitude.

I'm immensely proud of what we've all managed to build here, and want to wish our DM team a happy first anniversary.

Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback everyone ... and thank you so very much for the kind words Ron. You prompted me to go back and read the initial e-mails between you, Nan, Sharon and I, that started all of this on February 22, 2001 ... and I find it hard to believe that we were up and running within one month of the idea first being seeded. It's a good feeling, being able to look back on the last year to see how far we've come.

I've gained so much from a personal level during my time here at Passions and can't thank you ... and everyone, enough for allowing me to be a part of this wonderful community. With the help of our incredible group of SM's and DM's ... I look forward to many Anniversaries yet to come.

Much appreciation and hugs,
/Kit

Woah!!!!!! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!!! =))))
And not forgetting to cheer for each and everyone who has made this place a warm and loving home...

I haven't been in here in a long while, and sure do miss the nights I spent sitting in front of the computer reading the wonderful works of our poets.
Missing all of you here, but I'd better get my time management right first.

And then, I'll be back, and Kit, I want to join the Mod Squad again...
