       ~ The Story Of St. Patrick's Day ~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Touch this link to play...IRISH JIG
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now the story goes, a lad named Patrick
Was born on the 17th of March.
His Mother looked at both his feet,
then cried, "Begorra, he has no arch!"
~
“How will he ever be able to do a jig
with flat feet my poor, wee son?
Now every year on "O'Reilly's Day",
he’ll miss out on the jigging fun!”
~
As years went by Patrick grew,
to be quite the handsome man,
as a matter of fact he was,
the most handsome man in the clan.
~
But every single "O'Reilly's Day",
he’d hid amongst the shamrocks green,
while others did the Irish jig,
Patrick was just no where to be seen.
~
He would take off his buckled shoes,
and stare at his two, big, flat feet,
Oh how he wished he could do the jig,
Up and down Killarney’s street.
~
One year he’d had enough of this,
and stomped down to the town square.
He started jigging, flat feet and all,
this time he simply didn't care.
~
He started doing a real fancy jig,
and much to everyone's surprise,
he was jigging with the best of them,
Well, no one could believe their eyes!

The people began to cheer for Patrick,
“we’ll change it from O'Reilly to Patrick’s day!”
Well I might have kissed the blarney stone a little,
To send this silly, little greeting your way.

The four leaves of the four-leaf clover represent
hope, love, faith and luck.  May you find one and the luck of the Irish rub off on you!

Here is an excellent site to share with your family
for some St. Patrick's Day fun:

Thanks everyone - trying growing up as me, one side Irish, one Scottish - I was forever changing kilts to please both sides, but learned both types of dancing which was the good thing! I think we should all run out and buy at least one lottery ticket today and give it away if we win, what do you say?

Is that what Will Smith was saying when he was "Gettin Jiggy with it??"
This was fun, and I love the happy tune.
Cheers.

LOL! There's a saint somewhere that may disagree with your version of the origin but I like yours best!!

The shamrock, which comes from the Gaelic word seamrog, meaning three-leaved, was used by St. Patrick to illustrate a point. When he was preaching to the Irish people about "Three Gods and yet One.." he picked up a shamrock as a visual explanation and said, "Do you not see how in this wild flower three leaves are united on one stalk and will you not then believe that there are indeed three Persons and yet one God?" Anyway, forgive my small bit of trivia...

Your poem is FUN!!!

I am glad you liked this wee tale, and I thought you would get a kick out of some truth about St. Patrick (here's my trivia Michael)...

Some Truth About St. Patrick's Day for you...

St. Patrick was not actually Irish. He was born around 373 A.D. in the British Isles near Dumbarton in Scotland. His real name was Maewyn Succat. He took the name of Patrick, or Patricius, meaning "well-born" in Latin, after he became a priest.  Patrick traveled the roads and forded the rivers of Ireland for 30 years to see men and women "reborn in God' and come to know the Christ he loved so much. The old saint died in his beloved Ireland on March 17th, 460 A.D. The land that once enslaved him, had now been set free.

The most popular legend linked to St. patrick is his use of the shamrock as his visual aid teaching the principles of the Trinity, the belief in the threeness, and a through a confesson of the oneness of the Creator of Creation.

The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives.

Thank you Sue, but today was not a happy day for me or the relatives and friends of a dear friend, but we all survived it, and I suppose that the pain sometimes is what awakens even more memories to keep those in heaven alive in our hearts.  Hugs to you and Andrew.
