I am not flesh, nor shall I be,
but vultures hold me dear.
Shadow soldiers follow me
to whisper, “Victory’s near.”

I forge the sword, I draw the blade;
I reek of death and pain.
Frightened nations make the trade
and lock the final chain.

Trumpets sound, you cannot run-
this bargain’s sealed in blood.
Your young men fall beneath the gun
to crest the scarlet flood.

I am no god, nor shall I be,
yet all the demons bow to me.

I'm not speechless very often. *S* But this left me with so many feelings the fingers couldn't keep up. *S* It's chilling in its truth... and it's wonderfully written. Well done!

Dear suthern,
Thank you for reading this and letting me know. I started thinking about war after reading His Poet's poem about the war veteran who came home mind and spirit-crippled. This came out of that.

Dear Dave,
I appreciate you reading it and especially replying. It makes me feel like I haven't shoved the poem into a black hole. Thanks.

Very great...I felt the cold chill while reading, too.  Powerful.  And, every day, now, I can't help having a few ominous feelings over the war our country is now in.
I wonder how...if...it will end!  But, then, we must go on and live our lives, too.

Nan darling girl this is exceptional writing, utterly utterly brilliant. You have truly outdone yourself this time. Every single word in this is utterly perfect, you’ve really nailed this

Rarely is writing this good, certainly this far exceeds my expectations and my expectations for you are always high. YOU are a very good writer and this proves it.
Absolutely first class darling heart

Dear Accordionmaid,
Thanks for reading this and commenting. I appreciate it.  I always have a nervous feeling about wars. But you're right-you have to go on with your life.

Dear Sven,
War's loudmouthed and uncouth always.

Dear Marsha,
Thanks girl-you make me smile.

(big hugggssssss) Oh Nancy, this is so sad but true, sweet frinend, this too has such an ominous feel to it, for I too believe this is happening but it scares me to see this growing so rapidly, and I pray peace can be made somehow! (kiss on cheek) This is powerfully expressed, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Nancy, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Dear Noah,
Thank you. Here in America we haven't had war on our own doorstep in more than a century, and we're just realizing what it could mean. We're used to seeing it on the News, not with our own eyes. That's what really brings the chills.

Dear Lyra,
I think we all hate war, how could anyone not? I also hate that we have no choice but to fight it.

Dear Spitfire,
Thank you. I would love to live in a world at peace. I don't think I ever have.

Dear Balladeer,
How very nice of you!

beautiful writing.
sadly, the subject is as accurate as your meter and rhyme.
truly a comment on our society, when such beauty is devoted to such horror.

Dear Dave,
Thank you for your compliment on my writing. I don't expect any compliments on the subject as it is always ugly and often heartbreaking.
