A Day of Life

Youth,
as breaking dawn,
held cheerful songs of birds in chorus.
Dew’s sweet taste,
was not wasted on my tongue,
but savored.
Damp grasses fell silent to small feet,
and recorded childish giggles.

Day crept forward, stealthily,
‘til midday sun
broke sweat upon brow,
stinging eyes.
Hands worked,
as all hands must.
At times,
entangled in briars,
I watched them weep.

As setting sun
bled crimson light
to paint fading clouds.
I looked back on day,
trying to find missing hours,
regretful they had passed
so quickly and unnoticed.

Now, raising eyes,
I see that I’m entrapped
within a bowl of distant fiery suns,
wondering,
how long is night?
I hear forlorn singing of crickets.
In distance, a scream,
as some unwary creature
has been snatched unto death.
Sitting,
I pull knees to chest,
knowing, dawn has long since passed
and what’s left of life is night.
Hours grow steadily fewer,
as I await the piercing of this bowl of stars,
upon death's stilled heart.

~Michael Auguste~

Stars will shine when I am gone
Earth will spin on as before
Gulls still race along the shore
Morning star, still kiss the dawn

This has some sadness to it Michael. I have also worked hard and felt those sweat beads burning in my eyes and the most beautiful part of the day has been wasted it seems on work. But then the work produced is worthy of the hours spent on it. And thank God we have the cool night to rest. I love this piece so much. floria

Floria,

Thank you much. This poem compares a person's life to the length of a day.  Morning is childhood, midday is the middle of life and night is the waning years.  I'm glad you liked this piece.

Michael, I love how softly this poem speaks, as well as the imagery. Beautifully done...

The metaphors are perfect Michael.  This flows so smoothly....almost melancholey, but so beautiful.

(big hugggssssss) Oh Michael, this is soooooo beautiful but a little sad, sweet friend, it too always saddens me to think of life reflecting like this and how we feel we miss the sunrise and wish not for the day's end to come so fast when we just want to feel the light of morning always! (sigh) This is a very lovely and wonderfully expressed poem, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Michael, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Your use of metaphors, theme and imagery is outstanding.  I applaud the mastery of this poem and was greatly moved by the melancholy truth at the end.
You write the dark with a classic and graceful style.  Now I know why I admire your talent so much

This is a keeper!~

Take care,

Perfectly penned, day in the life, Michael.
I'm headed back for another read...
And into my library it goes!

So beautifully written Michael. Our human awareness of mortality, and the passing of life too quickly... and the sorrow that we feel when the middle seems like it is the end... So much talent poet. ThisDiamond

Everyone,

You have no idea how good your comments make me feel.  I worked on this poem for more than four hours, writing and re-writing it over and over.  That you enjoyed it, pleases me immensely.  Life just slip by so very quickly and like me, I'm sure many of you look back in regret and wonder why you allowed so many years to go by unnoticed.  Savor your days, is the only advice I can give, as I've learned to savor each one of my own.  Thank you all.
