China Doll Heart

I am like a china doll in a gift shop
solemnly awaiting the hour of release,
hoping, longing
for any man to save me from this existence
to choose me for the rare treasure that I am,
granting him the certificate of ownership
of my heart.

Like the others
I am carefully placed upon a stand
on a ledge coated with bargain tags and dust
forcefully displayed to the world
beneath a glass house of lies.
I come from the same mold,
the same cast of clay,
from the same palette of mundane hues
born over and over again with the same translucent features
worn by dozens of other dolls.

I am no jack in the box, no raggedy ann
nor am I a puppet or plastic Barbie play thing,
I am the finest of the fine,
a cleverly crafted darling,
a collectable porcelain princess.
Yet, there is no dignity
as I become a slave upon a shelf,
a soldier, standing tall and ever still
without a word, without a melody
or a sense of worth.
I yearn to be plucked from obscurity,
to be touched,
to find a home
and belong to someone, anyone.

You may scoff at the paradox of me
but, even inanimate objects
are faced with the realization of alone
through this passive paralysis called life.

Even dolls have the right to bleed,
to be fragile
in the dead of night
when the shop is closed
and all is silent,
even the screams.

The morning groans on once more
offering fragments of light
with every bell chime
and opening of the door;
and when the sun catches the marble flecks in my eyes
oh how they glisten with mystery and enchantment!
With come hither lashes and scarlet lips that rival heaven...
I am beauty incarnate.
And oh how my curls of auburn dance with the air
atop the velvet gown that adorns my limbs as a medallion.

With envious eyes and trusting smiles
I am dissected, yet, cherished in wonder
as I remain unchanged
under the glass that becomes me.
As many pass by staring,
some admiring, some refusing to see me,
I seem so strong,
so perfect in that moment,
but, my crystal turquoise eyes fight to hold back a lifetime's weep,
tears that would smear the intricately applied paint on my ivory-bisque skin,
tears teasing with the feeble plea that one day, someday soon, I will finally be free.

Yet, pass me by long enough
and my heart dismantles itself
and this china doll breaks into a million pieces,
desperate, unloved, unclaimed,
a hollow entity
as I succumb to the paradigm of time, fading to antique.

China doll heart, china doll eyes
china doll dreams and china doll soul
slowly dies.

Melissa,
Such bittersweet contrasts in this superb write. I am awestruck at your talent! This was so touching for it's depth and emotion. I felt your longing for what you so rightly desrve and so paitiently or impatiently await. I pray you get this and much more.

Thank you for all your terrific input in Passions and your poetry, you are one awesome lady indeed!

That was a very sad story of both human and china dolls, and that is why I hug at least two of my teddy bears each day, and I am serious!  Everything deserves to feel loved.

Here's hoping the china doll gets her wish

Once again you work the theme to poetic perfection...
loved the vocab and detail of imagery in this..(ivory-bisque skin)
you wrote it till I could smell the
porcelain.
Congrats on your milestone Meliss...
and thank you for all the lovely replies to my work and the butterfly poems youve gifted me with, that make up some of this number.
Its been a beautiful thing to watch you grow and find your voice poetically.

All hail, the Queen of Romance. . .

Melissa, this is one of the best that you've ever done. . . full of love, and longing. . . and yes, even a little bit of sadness. . . the heart is truly a fragile thing. . .but, not so fragile that it's always broken. . .

Congratulations my friend. . .

*sigh* I could see a silent tear flow down the delicate cheek of this china doll as she stood there longing for the heart of a man who would hold her tenderly and cherish her as she deserves...This poem is absolutely stunning, Melissa....it speaks so well of your heart and the desire of your soul...I know the feeling well but you have portrayed it better then I possibly could...**big big hugs**

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

Thank you all so much for making this milestone special

This poem is actually an oldie from open poetry 8, and if you refer back to it you'll see that although I kept the same theme and some lines intact, It's been re-written so much that it's practically a new poem.

For some reason, this poem means a lot to me, the emotions came so easily and yet at the same time I worked very hard to perfect this.  Although I am a optimistic person, even I sometimes delve into the dark and must write melancholy pieces to explain my feelings on that particular day.

*and hint, hint, the old version of this poem is not great in quality and, I'm almost embarssed to have it in the archives, so don't look lol!

Melissa,
Beautiful.....what can I say? You always seem to outdo yourself, and this is no exception.  I can relate so fully and completely, as I have been, and perhaps still am that "China Doll" sitting on the shelf, just waiting.... Congratulations on your 4000th post!  Here's to 4000 more...

Congratulations my sweet Melissa on your 4ooo ! I love the analogy and this poem is perfectly exquisite...every line is perfection! but, remember no man can MAKE us happy, we need to find our own happiness inside to then share it with another! Hugs, Ellie
