Listening to every heart

0 posted 2002-03-09 10:41 PM

Now, it fits….

Finally, she begins to understand
what it was that the mother had
experienced
in not experiencing it all…

Now it fits, now it fits, puzzled
pieces of how it must have been, now
that age shawls youth’s shoulders
grown mature with time…

How must it have been, her mother’s
illness after the birthing, no holding bonds
tieing kisses befalling cheeks pinkening
with lip’s caress

The father held, cared, fed, bathed, and
tied bonds no one could ever break or bend,
not that she would have wanted to do
so but how it must have hurt
when the other hurts subsided and
she could feel the arms of empty…

So when years later, her child slipped
away to visit the grandmother who saw
Cinderella trapped, and waved
a wand, called upon those who
owed a favor or two, come do, come do,
cut the tresses, purchase a dress,
lay an earring upon her and
see the girl become woman promised…

Her return to the mother caused
the empty empty to revisit the heart,
hurting anew with this loss of bringing
her child to womanhood,
she had been too busy, too engaged
to have seen it, and now it stood
before her, a future crossed
and no say by her…

disheartened, her shattered beliefs
dislodged anger toward the woman-child
who staggered in the disbelief
that sixteen years had seemed
moments ago…

Now it fits, now it fits,
for she held again
empty arms and was not the one to dress
and caress the tresses shorn,
was not the one to smile at the changeling
not the first one to say,
Welcome to my world…

The father attempted comfort, by
holding the empty
arms close, the childgrownwoman,
misunderstanding her mother’s loss,
only feeling the angry
face branding her eyes, her throat
constricting on tears unshed…

Now it fits, now it fits, and if her
mother were present, she would present
her fullness of understanding into those
empty, empty arms,

but feels in her heart that somehow,
someway, the mother sees the
tears now shedding, knowing,
now it fits, the puzzled piece,
the understanding
come home.

Karilea

Oh my, such a deep and loving look into the intricate family...where it is so easy to misunderstand, and then have the years slip away without ever putting things togeather.  You have done this so well...it hurt to read, yet also made me smile at human nature. Hugs!

===============================

that says it all to me, in soft spoken volumes....
you wrote this so delicately that it becomes as fragile as the memories...yet stands the test of time.
Classic K write...for you see beyond the surface.

Awake again I can't pretend ... and I know I'm alone ...
And so close to the end of the feelings we've known.

When it fits, does it feel good? There is so much in this. It's hard for me to focus on the whole, as I feel the bits and pieces of it paralleling similar memories.

With time... The pieces fall into their places... and they do indeed fit... This is a wonderfully fitting piece, dear Sun..

(smiles) Awwwwwwww, this is such a powerful heartwrenching piece, sweet friend, I too always wonder how such small things can sometimes fit so much together between ones we love so dear when we least expect it! (kiss on cheek) We all love you so much, sweet friend, this is fabulous! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karilea, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Karilea, I love the above line and the 'changeling' you've used in this. This is an amazing piece, so glad I got in to read it.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

It fit then and it fits now - and is every bit as painful today as it was then.  It seems the more things change the more they stay the same, and this emptiness now is for almost the same reason it was then, and terribly sad.  Loved this one.

The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives.

Hi Sunshine...
I always wonder at how things start to make sense as the years go by...this wonderful poem just emphasizes that!!!  Thank you!!

May I say that I am speecless? No word to tell you how I feel after reading this, except humbled at my meager writings? floria

There are things we'll never understand... but when even a few of the pieces drop into place, it adds compassion to the remembering. *S* This is magnificent, Sunshine... and touched me deeply. *S*

You have successfully plumbed depths few have the fortitude to attempt ... and you wrote them ... a formidable task that you carried off with poise.

Fool, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write.
