Shattered

I remember the vase
pale blue etched with white roses
given to me by my great grandmother
shattered
in one of your fits of anger
and I cried
as I picked each tiny fragment
up and placed them in a box
stored for years in the attic
where you or no one else could touch it

I tearfully packed that box
as you laughed in my face
when I finally said I was leaving you
dreams for our future
shattered
by years of abuse
and thrown together with the boxes
into the trunk of my car
as I set out to reclaim my life

Today that vase
sets on my mantle
full of pastel flowers made of silk
lovingly pieced together
by the one who found me
shattered
and located each fragment
I needed to make me complete

If you look close enough
you can see its imperfections
tiny hairline cracks
that refuse to hold water
but yet it remains useful
no, we’ll never be perfect
the vase or I
but from a distance
our beauty shines

~ Ruth

Ruth

It is those cracks that add character to the treasure.  Wonderful poem of strength.

My dear you beauty shines no matter the distance from your face. I love this! It's wonderful to find someone who can see the true value of our 'shattered vases' and our shattered emotions.

(sigh) Oh Ruth, I understand how you feel, and I believe love is never meant to be perfect, for no person is perfect but God, but yet we can always love another compassionately forever just as though it was almost perfect! (kiss on cheek) This is a wonderful emotional poem, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Ruth, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

You weave this metaphor beautifully with your life...this touched me, and I am so glad that you now have found peace just like my mom and I have   This is a keeper.

It's so good to read your poetry again~

Taking a shattered vase and putting it back together again is really wonderful. But to put shattered dreams and lives back together again...now THAT is totally, totally awesome. An excellent write.

Ruth - This poem has brought a tear of healing to my eye... I recall so well your shattered days - and I thank God for Rodger and the difference he has made in your life...

I once wrote about a mosaic heart... only to find that mosaics are fragile and don't take well to being booted out the door. *S* Those pieces are now trashed... which just gives me more appreciation for your strength in holding on and never letting hopelessness have its way. *S*

This is so beautiful, hoot... you don't know how happy I am that you and the vase have found the tender loving care you so deserve.

wonderful analogy my erstwhile friend, and one i think most everyone can understand in their own, unique way - i honestly believe we each have those tiny imperfections (okokok, no jokes ) but instead of imperfections, how about we call them character.

hugs you

Oh Ruth,

I've done so many things such as this for Rose.
I didn't think she noticed or even cared.
Maybe I'm wrong and it's a good thing I've done.
Nice insight. Thank you

Love always, dale

ruth...

wow...goodness what a powerfully
beautiful piece...even though there
may be cracks it's those "imperfections"
that make us who we are and all the more
strong. take care sweet friend. im glad
to see that you've recovered from the
abuse and found someone who loves you
true!

take care.
