~*~
Play Remembering by Bruce de Boer
~*~

Theirs is a home on an average street,
Lace curtains, and pretty garden so neat.
Beyond the doorway all you’ll see,
is a woman living captive in misery.

She knows nothing else but feeling bad,
hiding behind sunglasses, feeling sad.
She walks with her shamed head bowed down,
hiding a beautiful face in a permanent frown.

Like Peter Pumpkin Eater, he kept her in,
her skin’s so pale; her body’s so thin.
No self-esteem, she’s lost her spark,
so very alone, living in that dark.

The PTA, the church, their friends,
would never guess from the message she sends.
She’s been held hostage, it was just the way,
until she finally had enough one day.

She had wanted to leave him before you know
but with no money, and a child where would she go?
One day she ducked as he threw at her a book.
He yelled, "Be quiet, sit there and look."

Well look she did, and inside was some hope.
Pages with testimonials of others starting to cope.
Right in her neighbourhood there was help at hand,
Women went there to escape, and take a stand.

She got up the nerve to go by there one day,
just wanting to look and never to stay.
She was greeted at the door by a woman with a smile,
“Won’t you come in and we'll talk for a while?”

Before she knew it she had told her tale,
constantly looking at her watch, biting her nails.
The woman hugged her and said, “You're welcome to stay here,
we'll help you through this, please have no fear.”

After a bit of therapy, and legal work she was now free,
so healthy and happy, were her son and she.
She greeted each day now with a great big smile,
healthy, confident and walking in style.

It was many years later, when she looked out the door,
where she now volunteered, but had stood once before.
She greeted a woman standing there with her big smile,
“Won’t you come in and we'll talk for awhile?”

I have known a few women like this, and it is wonderful that there is help out there, and that you bring attention to it. This is a heartfelt poem. floria

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Sharon, God Bless You, I know just how she feels for when I was just a little boy, I used to be abused all the time by boys in my neighborhood and my father always ignored me and left me to cope with my own sadness, and I felt that no one would ever love me, but now I have found new hope after finding wonderful friends like you and in taking depression medication, and now I have my dream girl Joanna that I dream of sharing a lifetime of happiness with! (wipes tears) You are a true angel, sweet friend, my dream is to devote my life to helping children who have been hurt and abused and helping them become happy and feel special about themselves! We all love you so much, sweet friend, I know we all can help if we all work together, I join you in your prayers for every one of these children! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Sharon, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

~* Thank you all for your understanding replies *~

and...Noah what a wonderful goal to help others never feel the abandonment of a child.  They will identify with you and learn to trust in someone who has had similar circumstances.  Noah - I am so sorry you had to endure that as a child, no child should ever feel anything but love and safety.

A great message you have written here Sharon. I’m sure it must be very difficult for women to get out of abusive situations, and it’s good to know there are places and people like this to help them.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

To be sure hope in the face of hopelessnes is truly a gift, what light has the hand of the helper in the eyes of the helpless. We hear all to often, the circle of violence. Hurrah for the cycle of love!

~* Once again, you are all awesome *~

There are shelters and houses for women and children running from abuse in every single town.  They can be found  through family services, churches, and hospitals.  Staff there will direct those in need to a place to be safe if they aren't ready to get the police involved.  I just wish everyone knew this for the sake of themselves and their chidren, for it is the children that suffer the most, and it is a memory that never leaves them.  Okay, hopping off my soapbox now with sincere thanks once again.  Thank you all.

How well you've painted this solemn read... I've been there and just wish that I would have known about such places... Ignorance is not always bliss... Bravo! It is good to know we are not alone and someone out there cares. Love and peace, Maggie ((~.~))

Nothing like this was available to me overseas...they took his word over mine....always, and those who knew the truth, didn't tell anyone, didn't help me at all.I left on my own, with my son, and went back to my parents...I still thank God every day for them taking us in and letting me heal and start my life over...It's almost been 10 years for me now, and the healing is still a work in progress. I loved this, as it touched me deeply.

Well Gals ~*~ I try to write from my own experiences, and this was one of mine, but 3 times, until I smartened up.  The trick is to leave it all behind and literally run for your life let me tell you.  When you are in an abusive relationship for the first time you are so scared, especially if there are kids involved....hey....let's take this to the discussion area okay?  Maybe we can help someone - so thank you all for your replies.

You have such a compassionate heart to write about this important issue!  Thank you for doing so.  I won't get into details, but, my mom and I know all too well the devastation of abuse.  This moved me, well said!~

Take care,

My mother lived this for 14 years...even though she had support and a place to go.
There are no easy answers...but talking about it gives it a name and its victims a voice. Any time poety can serve a purpose like this, its just and commendable.
Thank you for sharing this and for just being you.

Faterider ~ I thank you for your comment.

Melissa ~ I am so sorry to hear of any experience of this, and hope it all behind you now - thanks for reading this one.

Janet Marie ~ You are right there are no answers and speaking about it takes it to a new level of trust for victims.  I too know many that stay when they could leave, I guess it's so hard to understand that feeling of unworthiness that holds them to what they feel they deserve.  So darn sad.  Opps, forgot to thank you for your comment, and I am also so sorry to hear of your experience as well.
