at one

asphalt road
stretches
toothpick straight
flat and narrowing
into a horizon
that never moves

sizzling rubber
clicks and zips
hypnotically
over sun cracked
and tar patched pavement
as silent sands
peppered with brush
struggle against
an intruder's vortex

mirages make magic
with puddles
that appear
and disappear
behind sinuous veils
of heat
boiling my imagination

occasional critters
skitter and dash
across my path
shaking me from
this trance i've found
in the mantra
of the highway

You've captured this scene perfectly Mike. I used to become almost hypnotized driving  the highway an hour back and forth to the office each day in the summertime. I know this vision well. Excellent imagery!

Best wishes,
/Kit

Thank you all.....having thousands of miles of desert driving under my belt, I found these images somewhat easy to relate.  Glad I could take you along for the ride.*S*
