The Birds

they’ve been gone
so long
it was as if
even the birds
were refusing
my hospitality
my caring

seeds
lay in wait
for months
through
the last weeks
of summer
then
naturally
through winter
into spring’s
taunting
in February

they came
but to the ground
where cats abound
dangerously
pecking
at what they found

why
why did they not feed
where I’d laid out
lovely fare
but now
they’re there
swinging
to the clinging
feeders
are the eaters

Glad you enjoyed the poem.

I have to say though that I am owned by four cats, two outside ones and two inside ones. What I have felt concern and amazement over is that I've provided food in a safe place for finches, yet some house finches have been seeking sustenance in the flower beds...dangerous. There are many cats that visit my yard, besides mine, too. It seemed to make no sense to me to court danger when food has been bountifully supplied in feeders.

Anyway, I had fun writing the poem because it was inspired by the joy of the birds returning to the feeder. I guess it's just because the birds are bird-brained.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

Oh VAS can I ever relate to this, since I have like ten birdfeeders out back, but most of my birds have stayed, the squirrels are also a problem.. I miss the ones that have not stayed through winter. this is lovely, very meaningful to me. flora
thanks for the help on my moon poem, I revised it in reply...let me know what you think.

thnx, strbbx and ecrivan...I'm aware of bird migrations, but even though I bought new feed, once it was replenished in our stores last summer, the birds stayed away from my feeders. They went to all the others in the neighborhood. They'd been prolific at mine until they stopped coming. Then, of course, they were not here in the worst of winter and when they first came back, they fed on the ground, if they came to my yard. A dangerous place to feed, me thinks. But finally, yesterday afternoon they came back to my feeders. Today thery are more numerous and more frequent. I almost titled this piece, "Oh, Joy!" Thanks for the read and the comment!

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

(smiles) Awwwwwww, I know just how you feel, sweet friend, I suppose cats, weather patterns, and human activity are all things that can change the habitats of birds, I know deep down they will all come back soon and eat from your feeders again! (kiss on cheek) We all love you so much, sweet friend, this is excellent! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Virginia, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton
