I sit here on this narrow bunk-
And think about the past.
And gaze upon the untouched meal,
They gave me as my last.

I never thought ‘twould come to this.
A man condemned to die…
All I can do is pace my cell,
And look out at the sky.

I wonder how it came to this-
What brought this fate of mine.
I never spent one day in jail,
I just turned forty-nine…

I guess I won’t see fifty…
My course is finally run-
A fitting fate, the papers say…
For those who use a gun.

I once rode with the Rangers,
Wore a badge in Santa Fe.
And they were glad to have me,
But that was yesterday.

Today I am an outcast-
They call me Satan’s spawn…
A killer who’s outlived his time,
They’ll hang we with the dawn.

You sure are one heck of a storyteller!!
Great write.  I'll be there at dawn on my white steed to rescue you.

Pacing in a cell always gives us time to reflect. The good we done the bad we did and it's always some one elses call if we get out at all. Good read Pard.

This is one of your best, John... It's a great piece that speaks both on the surface and metaphorically.  I wonder.. Can a poetic admin grant a pardon?.. I certainly hope so...
