NO NEED TO FEAR...

Tiny fingers tapped lightly
upon my sleeping skin, and
then I heard her trembling voice...
on the verge of frightened tears...

"Mommie mommie, I'm so afraid..
a monster's in my room," she cried.
So I held her close, and stroked her hair
trying to sooth her childish fear.

"His eyes are purple, big and round
..he's ugly and he's hairy. And,
then he makes a growling sound
that makes him awful scary...
So Mommie can I sleep with you..
just tonight..Oh please?"

"Yes you can..of course you can,
but it's just a silly dream. And,
dreams are never true you know;
they make things different ...
than what they seem. Things
that move upon your walls
are merely shadows of the trees.
A howling noise that you might hear
is just the wind that rides the breeze."

And, as I held her close to me,
I felt her clutch give way. Yes,
soon her eyes were fast asleep;
her fears were finally held at bay
...I laid there wide awake, and
thought of such an absurd notion,
and yet it stirred my own deep fears,
and triggered my emotions.......

"No need to fear," I told myself...
he cannot hurt you anymore.
Brutality stands in the cold, and
can't get through dead-bolted doors.
I fought old visions,
and haunted thoughts , and
tried to chase the dread.
I turned away from shadowed walls,
and quickly covered our heads.
I held my daughter tightly near..
and whispered softly in her ear.....

"There are no monsters my dear one...
Mommie is right here. There is
No need to fear dear one....
...No...no need to fear."

wow..I really enjoyed your  story Joyce..when I was younger I slept with
the covers over my head...I have progressed to still needing them touching my face.

Nighttime fears are awful.

hugs

those monsters can be so scarey. This is beautiful.

On the wings of words our spirits fly....and our souls are free.
