It has come to my attention
That you’re using my little ditty
To woo all the gentlemen
And make yourself seem pretty

You saw my poem on that page
And thought you’d never be caught
Who was your teacher of right and wrong
Was this what you were taught?

Stealing is stealing, that’s the end of it
There is no ‘borrowing’ here
So the next time you claim my work is yours
I’m afraid you’re in deep trouble dear

Plagiarism is a crime you know
And I personally think it’s a sin
Don’t take what doesn’t belong to you
You can’t know the trouble you’re in!

Leave these words right where they’re written
Don’t lift them from pages of blue
For if I find out, you’ve stolen them
I’m coming after you!

**
Please note, this is NOT written for anyone specific..I've been reading about the Supreme Court's problem dealing with copyright issues and felt this would be timely.

Aptly timed indeed... There's never a bad time to remind folks that what's theirs is theirs and what's yours is yours... wordly wise anyway... Thanks, PdV..

wow..made my heart thump...sometimes when I am inspired by a phrase(and I always say so)
I worry about plagiarism...

I have had mine stolen  before..so I understand, although it was in  my beginning days and to look at those poems today, I would almost give them away. *s

Nicely done.

Sharon darling girl Oh WOW when YOU write you really write, this is utterly utterly fabulous. This is so incredibly right I love it love it love it.

I couldn’t give my poems away, I sometimes wonder when inspire becomes plagiarism. Keth and I are always swapping words, a phrase here a throwaway remark there. And we joke about waltzing off with any words the other puts down but we don’t steal them as such we just use them in a different way.

This is a serious subject though and I agree what is written by you remains yours. Unless you gift it to someone else, but the write is rightfully yours eternally

You've written this well Sharon and made your point, well done

I like the way you got your message across in this one. I've never understood why anyone would want to steal someones elses work.(not sure...should I be offended that no one has ever stolen mine??? Lol)

I liked what Tracey said, and I've wondered the same thing about being offended.
That was a great comment, and a strong message PDV.  Good work!!

hey, great lines in this one!! i think i'll borrow a few

hehe

yeah, copyright is a helluva thing, that's for sure... i gave up putting my little (c) mark by my name because i figure if my words mean something to someone enough that they'd trouble themselves to steal them, then they can have them... they certainly aren't making ME wealthy... LOL!!

but seriously, it's a big issue and you addressed it well in your piece here, sharon....

you know what i heard recently on the radio? it was right after George Harrison died... the Beatles signed away rights to almost ALL their songs... THUS the Harrison song "It's Only a Northern Song".... because "NORTHERN" was the company which made those young kids sign when they were young kids and dammit!!!! it SUCKS!!!! they lost a lot of money over it

but money means nothing either, right? can't buy anything with it

can't buy freedom or truth or hope...

er... or can you?

I think it is wonderful when poets inspire each other....and I think it's fantastic when they give each other kudos for the inspire, but to steal words that weren't written in your soul, makes me wonder if that person has a soul....it's a terrible thing.....

Excellently expressed , yes it did happen to me on two or three occasions , I wrote this way back in 1/3/2001

Plagiarizing Hurts

There it was written
What could be worse
All words the same
Each and every verse

All thought was mine
Though taken away
Saw my poem copied
By someone today

I’m holding copyright
Though left off the sign
Why had they copied
This poem of mine

It was heart and soul
A poem my property
As plagiarizing hurts
So why do this to me

Hope

Plagiarism is a no-no indeed! It is very deceitful to steal someone else's work and pass it off as your own! I'm glad your posted this, it serves as an awareness poem!

Will do, and the poems found in this thread are very true and strong..and apt. There is still the case in Kansas about high schoolers stealing biology info online for research papers http://fyi.cnn.com/2002/fyi/teachers.ednews/02/07/plagiarism.dispute.ap/ as well as the Supreme Court upcoming decison about copyright time frames http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A32412-2002Feb19.html , discussed in Philosophy /pip/Forum8/HTML/000311.html . This is the time for such conversation, and I thank you, PdV, for posting this one.

You may have noticed I've barely been around the past few days... of course, considering how lazy my fingers can be, it's hard to tell sometimes whether I'm around or not... just call me lurker. *G*

But this month, I've been bombarded with research projects... and several of them have included copyright issues. Yesterday, I finished a memo on fair use that earned me a comment I suppose (since it came from an attorney *G*) was meant as a compliment - that I should be an attorney cause I'd be a good one. *G* (If you've ever worked with attorneys, you'll know why I'm not sure whether it was compliment of not. *G*) But I think it was simply a matter of topic... it's easier when you care passionately about the subject. *S*

So now you know why this was the first poem I opened. *S* I like it very much, PDV. *S* I'm afraid I'd end up in criminal court if someone ever stole my work... copyright protection wouldn't help either of us if I dismembered the offender. LOL

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Sharon, my heart goes out to everyone here who has been victimized by plagiarists, I hate plagiarism so much and I think it's absurd and selfish how someone can steal anothers work! (sigh) This is a wonderful poem of awareness, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Sharon, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

BRAVO!!!! I have been lucky...so far..at least as far as I know, no one has ever done this to any of my work but a few of my friends have had it happen and I have found it to be incredibly upsetting....A person's work is their pride and joy and for someone else to put their name to it is likened to a rape of the person's talent....BRAVO!!! Well said...**big hugs**

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

Thanks PDV, for warning everyone.  I don't mind if someone borrows my thoughts but I hate it when they steal my words.....so far, luckily, no one has ever stolen my words...probably because no one would want them anyway.....

Poet this is so timely. You know I just went through this heartache, and what actually happened with me is that someone stole my poem and put their name on it, then another person came along and saw my name under my poem and accused me on another board and I was almost kicked off that board. So this is a big big problem. It is a shame that some people that cannot write have to steal. I would just not write if I couldnt. I am so glad that you posted this. Thank you, floria
