Play Enchanted Nights by Bruce deBoeur

Inside her heart and soul she had created her own darkness.
Her room was stuffy, and the air was stagnant.
Her heart uttered a sigh as she opened her shuttered window.
The air outside was not so much tinted as swollen
with the smell of spring and cherry blossoms.
How long had she been in this abyss hidden away
thinking drawn curtains would protect her heart?
Today the shape of her body, fetus-like
a top a rumpled bed moved with some purpose.
She was ready to search for answers.

Outside the dawn kept breaking against her will.
The grass kept growing, bulbs sprouting.
New life was happening as far as her eye could see.
One silken tear trickled down her cheek
staining her skin as if by proclamation,
that life begins and ends on cue
as though the entire of it were orchestrated.
Being alive she knew was something
she had taken for granted all too long.

She had been all alone fisted up in this grief,
but today as wind whistled through the cracked window,
it somehow felt inviting and fresh, a scent of renewal.
Outside things were birthing, and somehow,
she now enjoyed the music of the passing cars
they had both shouted at, and she realized she smiled.

She stretched, turned, and heaved a sigh.
With the anticipation of a birth, she saw it.
The trunk. His old steamer trunk.
She knew she had to absorb the memories of him.
Sift through time and feel the love there.
As if by some magic osmosis let him into her.
She had to smell him and in this reminiscence
learn how to carry him in her heart with a lightness
and discard the heavy chain of sadness that now bound her.

She knew she had to get herself through this alone,
and was so grateful for this time.
As she walked over her heart resonated so loudly.
Through her tears, a smile escaped, then a tiny anxious laugh.
Oh, she knew people were going to say things and do things,
look a certain way, make an expression,
reminding her of him and how he loved her so.
She had only just realized that there
would be sadness but  it was meant for her to celebrate his life.
These memories would remind her of him and his love,
and carefully she began to sort the memories of him in her heart.

Thank you Nancy, Noah and Victoria - as you know I love art, and had to write something about this work, it was awesome!  Don't you just marvel at how people can paint like this?

Marvel at the artist?.. Certainly.. Both of them - the one with the brushes & paints - and the one with the tablet & quill...

I think many of us have a similar trunk... even if only in the corners of our minds. *S* This is beautiful, Mysteria... the sadness does eventually allow smiles back into our lives. *S*

Hello Sharon

How your words moved me and touched my heart.  It made me think of the many times I visit my Dad's shed, the place he spent many hours in.  Even now I still feel his presence whenever I go in there and this brings me great comfort just as your words have done.

Take care......Sue

Ah Sue, your words of your Dad are so tender and I know thoughts of him alway warm your heart, and I feel I knew him.
