Open a can of worms

I was wondering
What it is, about this thing
It opens and closes using a lightly swing
Thinking, it is actually a simple thing!
Controversial perhaps, maybe so
A debate for decades, so?

Some say it should be down
Otherwise, they will frown
Some say it should be elevated
Therefore, no hassles are created

However we do discuss
The matter is never settled without a fuss
It’s either up or either down
No winner no loser wears here a crown

Mathematical, a solution seems so clear
Just estimate the time for “up” by the amount of beer
Estimate the time for tea
At which point it should lye below the knee
A clear result this would give
Nevertheless, this would still all be “Relative”

I heard that in the middle of the night
One party, that does not turn on the light
And this party is getting quite the a shock
As intense coldness sets in, ad hoc

Embarrassing for the other party, yes it is
If it is down and in the dark, it was a miss
No end is then to hear
Only “I clean it up my dear”

By now I’m sure one understands
That this controversial will never ends
Would there only be sensor that would show
Where the lid should be, you know

One can only asked to be forgiven
We are forgetful when it comes to living
Others can be happy when,
She does have a toilette-trained man

Leaving this can of worms open and free
A phrase in reply, is all I asked of thee

Dear Helmut, Keep it down. I have sat without looking, and it wakes you right up.
Not pleasant, really.
