His Birthday

It's Feb.24, a Sunday, It is nine AM
And he would be walking through the door
Because it is his birthday
And I always had dinner at my home,
for anyone in our family,
on their birthday.
The house is quiet today.
There is no dinner in the oven
There is no birthday cake
The only normal thing is the
coffee pot full of hot coffee.
Right now, the door would
be opening and he would be
walking in.
Something in his hand,
dessert or something to eat
for the table.
He always did that.
Sunday dinners were always served early.
Around one PM
But he came early.
The others would get here around noon.
He said, that
it was the only way to visit with me.
He said that it got too noisy,
when everyone else arrived.
So he would come early.
And as I was cooking,
we would talk.
How is work?
How are you feeling?
How is the truck running?
Today it is so quiet
you could hear a pin drop.
He is not here.
He lays beneath the earth,
with a black granite stone
setting on his grave.
His picture is etched
on that stone.
I think I didn't want anyone
to forget him.
How could anyone
forget him?
He was one of those
that you could never forget.
Wait!!
Is that the doorbell?
No, it's not.
He's gone.

Floria

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Floria, this is so very sad, I know of your loss ever so much and my heart cries out to you! (EXTRA BIG HUGS) I understand this may be a pain that will always be with you, but know deep down always that George will always love you as you love him, and nothing can ever change that, for you are mother and son and your love will always flourish! (kiss on cheek) Oh my gosh, now my face is flooding with tears, my thoughts are with you always, you are a true angel to us all and we all love you so much! God Bless You! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Floria, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Floria, Oh, this is so touching. I am sure your son's spirit is always around you dear one. Take heart in knowing he loved you so. Very moving. Chris

Floria, thank you for this heartfelt write that only a mother could pen with such thoughts of remember.  It is wonderful how you wrote this as if thinking, remembering, and then returning to the here and now and wondering if it was the doorbell...great write from a sweet lady on such a sad day for you and the rest of the family and friends.
~Hugs to you, Nancy~

floria,
Always the reminders. Bitter because of the absence and sweet because of who he was and you always to remember him as. Courage and strength to you. Don't stop writing your remembrances as they are indeed appreciated immensely.

floria, you have me in tears!
I can barely type this to you because the tears are making me eyes blurred.
I know sort of how you feel, I miss my grandma very very much, but your pain is probably worse from a mom to her son.
Be well floria, you and your family are in my prayers. (((warm hugs)))

Floria mum (Mushy)told me it was your son’s birthday today and that you were in her prayers, you’re in mine as well. I send you a loving hug from us both.

Thank you for writing this, I can only imagine the unutterable loss of being that must haunt a mother’s soul when she loses a child. You have written his memory beautifully, I really do think this is an outstanding piece of writing and I also thank you, this reminds me not to take anything for granted

Take care dear lady

Love and warm stuff

Oh Floria...I read this over and over...I truly know this feeling.  I wish I didn't but, unfortunately...I do, and my heart and my hugs go out to you.  My eyes are filled with tears right now.  Tomorrow is my son, Eric's half birthday.  He was born on August 25, 1969.  He would have been 32 and 1/2 tomorrow.
Your sorrow is so beautifully expressed!

Oh, Floria, I'm crying so I can't really reply. About the technical aspects of the poem, of course it must be wonderful, because I didn't notice, I was caught up from the beginning, and the tears started falling. You have my sympathy, and i know that's worthless in face of your pain. If I lost either of my boys I don't think I'd survive, I have the greatest admiration for you and Lyra for being able to go on.

You certainly have shown your love of your
son....Very clearly within your words....

I know this feeling well....from death and
from divorce...when you feel the emptiness
of the bed....the table that only one sits
at....but that was then...not now..

I can’t imagine how hard this day must have been for you. The silence, and the deafening noise of the memories. Hold fast to those memories, for they do sound amazingly beautiful. I lost my Mom in a similar way, to a brain aneurysm, but I know the pain is not as hard as losing a child. My thoughts are with you. (ps, does he golf??..my mom’s organizing golf outings in heaven...she's probably tried to get him out on the course already!!)

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

This is what poetry's all about, dear lady...a way to transfer one's emotions to paper and ease the pain of heartbreak over tragedy....although I am sure your pain is still intense and will be. You have chosen to put it down in words, though, through acknowledgement and that in itself speaks volumes of your strength of spirit. Thank you for sharing this....
