to grow old and remain single
to wake up and see no company
experience constant pangs of loneliness
will it be like this for me when you are seventy?

to wake up in the middle of the night
to suffer from exhaustion and fright,
you can try and change your tape
see your dark dreams do not repeat

or just keep physically fit if you are that way
set your mind on respiration exercises so thoughts don't stray;
be concentrated on the beauty of life that surrounds
say to yourself when was the last time I exclaimed that beauty abounds.

see that company will come your way.
so many lonely people in this world
you would think that there would enough people
for everybody to have somebody.

So very well written, Martin.....and it is probably true.  I guess I've been lucky so far.  I've only been alone for about a year of my whole life.
I wonder if there really is someone for everyone, its just a matter of finding that special someone.
I wish you much luck in your search.

I'm only a little guy, about that same age. But I'm always wanting to comfort someone,as God gave me a ton of love to share. I'll gladly listen to you and be your friend, anytime you want to talk.

I wish I could gleefully declare a belief that there is someone for everyone...but, I have my doubts on this.  Today anyway.

Perceptive write ecrivan.

Thanks for clicking in Mirror Man,

it could be that some stay single without realizing the risk of falling prey to lonliness and as in the case of losing a loved one well I needn't say more...

amusemi,

I wonder too lately, it seems nobody wants to commit themselves, or they get choosy as they age?

i would swear you wrote this for me some time in the future but most people can't see so many years ahead, even if they're poets... lol

it's a profound statement to say that it's amazing there are so many lonely people in the world who can't find each other... (i don't have the topic review wndow open, but i know your poem stated something like that in the last stanza and I thought it quite profound).

I think the internet has been a great help for many lonely people because they are able to converse and interact with other lonely people they would have never been able to converse and interact with otherwise.... too bad it's so sterile and oftentimes cold

but i'm rambling here... all this to say this is a really fine write with a good message.

It's amazing to me that I know so many people who are alone and choose to be alone.

The distinction, I think, is the difference between "loneliness" and beling "alone". Sometimes you can be more lonely in a crowded room or living with a person who is not a good match for you then you can be when you're all alone.

hmm.. i better leave the rest of my thoughts alone for now because otherwise I'll write a very long essay which might become a novel or a movie or something and it will be too long to read and then people will leave me alone and ignore me for many months and possibly years because i have said so little with so many words... hehe... just rambling again... geesh

well, gotta run now... my cat, Wink, is mewing for food, my daughter is calling me, my roommate is also sending up flares for help with something, there's phone calls i need to return and all those people from work want to meet with me regarding a project deadline.....

i wish i had more time to be lonely.....lol

but one last thought....  babies die without touch because they are human and one day i'm going to write that into a poem myself...

thanks for a great read and for being tolerant of my mid-morning friday ramblings.....
