They gave their hearts for love
meant you were a hawk not a dove
children gutted capfuls of fishy liver oil
parents boarded screeching streetcars.

in those days, you never refused a dime
and you would pick a penny from the curb
now so much jargon can be read from blurbs
housewives call in sick, no work to disturb.

shoppers run to malls, with hearts all wrapped
children board metros and buses at low fare
the masses grow, the world keeps no promises
art groups fill austere underworlds, no premises

My bags slowly fill even tough I empty them
my breathes are thinned, yet air still abounds
I once gave my heart and soul for love
masses grow, the world keeps no promises.

I still pick up pennies... ya know, 100 of them will still make a dollar... or 62 cents U.S. And I can remember when it only took 5 of them to buy a chocolate bar or 10 bubble gums.... Am I showing my age?  Great Poem!!!

Love, Light and Peace,

Sherry

Cherish the good memories past and look forward to the adventure called Tomorrow.
But above all... be kind to yourself today.

I cherish those memories too Sherry! I too would dream of scraping up the extra penny for a nickel bag of chips.

Hi Nan,

Sadly so, or as a cousin used to say "the way you make your bed is the way you sleep in it."
