Outfoxed by the Fox

Boudreau left to go hunting one day
taking his trusty dog Hocum along
Hocum’s nose was at the ground to stay
Boudreau was singing a hunting song

Hocum, twitching his nose, started to bay
letting Boudreau know what lay ahead
He spied a fox running to get away
across the meadow and into a creek bed

Hocum was hot on the trail of the fox
Boudreau was running not far behind
Through the creek bed, over slippery rocks
into the entrance of an old deserted mine

Hocum was not about to leave the scent
even tho the mine was as dark as night
He would go until his energy was spent
he’d catch that crafty ole fox all right

Poor Boudreau loathed the dark mine
that’s where creepy creatures crawled
Up ahead he could hear Hocum whine
“Hocum, you get out here,” he called

All of a sudden Boudreau heard a roar
that could not possibly come from a fox
With speed, out of the cave Hocum tore
scaring poor Boudreau out of his socks

Boudreau heard the roar once again
He was moving as fast as he could run
“God help these feet to move, Amen”
It was time for this hunt to be done

He turned around to take a peek behind
there sat the fox and a brown bear
He knew this whole thing had been designed
there were smiles on the faces of the pair

Boudreau had been outfoxed by the fox
He walked home feeling pretty glum
He’d like to see that fox buried in a box
This was a hunting story to keep mum

LOL, as I could see my little Skippy dog running with Hocum. Skippy is a Jack Russell Terrier, a go-to-ground dog that thinks anything smaller than a Mack truck is fair game. A funny write, Wanda. But since I love those little foxes, I really liked the ending.

Larry, Doreen, Midenitesun; I do so enjoy your comments.  Midenitesun, your Skippy sounds like quite a dog..h-m-m-m-m, so he finds anything smaller then a Mack truck fair game.  How many bears has HE tackled? :-) Thank you all for your response to this story/poem.  Wanda
